“He was a socialist anti-war propagandist, NOT a soldier.”

True.

“He was an anti-war socialist correspondent.”

True.

“Most pacifist, socialist-loving correspondents aren’t exactly known for accurate reporting.”

True.

“Most American socialists hated Hitler when he attacked the ‘homeland’ ... “

True.

You have not proven any of my statements to be false.

Well, not only is that more slander (show me the evidence, sparky) it shows you don't know squat about WWII history. Hitler attacked the Soviets almost six months before we entered the war, two months before Rooney was drafted and a full 18 months before he flew his first bomber mission. Seems like your timeline makes no sense.

Actually it makes perfect sense. AR originally consider being a concientious objector. This was the same position most socialists took when Hitler was allied with Russia. You say AR entered the war AFTER Hitler attacked Russia. Many socialists volunteered to serve to fight Hitler AFTER he attacked their homeland.

So, then publish the specifics without naming Mr. Rooney as the victim. My mother is 98 and has survived surgery within the past year. My husband is 74 and has undergone brain tumor surgery within the last year and is flourishing afterward (non-malignent tumor). Both of them are blessed and very lucky. However, we also know people in the 60-80 year range who went into the hospital for non-threatening surgery within the last year and who never came out on their own two feet. One that I remember was from knee surgery (don’t we all know half a dozen people who have survived that) and one was from cataract surgery — not usually life threatening. i also know a few who got MRSA from a hospital near here that tries to keep its statistics secret. Shhhhhhh.

Rooney probably hated Patton for wanting to take out the enemy the US befriended, the Communists.

Many journalists hated Patton for that reason. Drew Pearson was one.

Andy Rooney: “Why not, instead of commemorating Veterans Day, we establish and work on what we could call a “No War Day”.

but he's a liberal jerk who flew over Wilhelmshaven on a plane that got shot up

He was a correspondent out to get a story. The originally sat with a group of correspondents in their tents waiting for the flights to return.

I claimed he had combat time.

But not as a soldier, as a socialist anti-war pacifist correspondent who didn't want to be the only correspondent in his group not to go with the squadrons.

If he said that it was modesty.

I don't think anyone can seriously claim that AR was ever modest!

Rooney was a liberal jerk, but he's a liberal jerk who flew over Wilhelmshaven on a plane that got shot up. I'm still waiting for the tales of your WWII combat hours. Your repeated crapping upon his honorable service is dishonorable and shameful.

What was he? Was he a pilot? Co-pilot? Navigator? Bombardier? Gunner?

on a plane that got shot up.

One hit that caused one injury. To the bombardier who tried to block the cold air coming in with his bare hand.

The dude was 92 years old. A hard morning crap could have killed him.

Now that's funny!

As for Rooney, far better men than he did not make it to 92, so he needs no eulogy from me.

Here is one of AR’s tales of war:

“What I did was marginally dangerous because there were always artillery and mortar shells coming in, but when the dreaded whisper “Moving out” was passed down the line .... I didn’t have to move out. ... I stayed behind in the safety of whatever nook or cranny we’d found while we talked.”

You have not proven any of my statements to be false.

Au contraire, sparky.

1. Your statements that he was not a soldier and not a veteran are false.

2. Your assertion that he changed his mind about fighting Hitler is false on its face because it would require him to oppose fighting Hitler, then support it when he was drafted, then oppose it, then support it, since he has said he was still opposed when he reached Europe.

3. Your statement that socialist pacifists are not known for their accuracy is technically true, but since you were talking about him and his work, you were accusing him specifically and have provided no evidence to back it up.

Three lies about one guy in one thread. Charming, and so honorable.

“Why not, instead of commemorating Veterans Day, we establish and work on what we could call a “No War Day”.

1. Cite your source. Not that I don't believe he said it, but you've proven yourself to be fast and loose with the facts.

2. If a guy who is a war veteran wants to say that he'd rather have a day for peace than a day to honor guys like him, so what? You haven't claimed he merely had stupid ideas, you've claimed he lied and undermined the American war effort while in the Army. No evidence so far...

But not as a soldier, as a socialist anti-war pacifist correspondent who didn't want to be the only correspondent in his group not to go with the squadrons.

1. Citation? Include proof he was still a pacifist against the war at this point.

2. Doesn't that conflict with your idea that he stopped being anti-war when Hitler attacked Russia? His Wilhelmshaven mission happened a year and eight months after the invasion of the USSR. Care to explain?

3. How much combat time do you have in the B-17, again?

I don't think anyone can seriously claim that AR was ever modest!

There's garden variety modesty and there's making it clear you aren't Captain America. I meant the latter.

What was he? Was he a pilot? Co-pilot? Navigator? Bombardier? Gunner?

1. He was a guy who has a B-17 mission over Germany that could have very easily cost him his life in a messy way.

2. What position did you fly on the B-17? Pilot? Co-pilot? Navigator? Bombardier? Gunner?

One hit that caused one injury. To the bombardier who tried to block the cold air coming in with his bare hand.

And how many holes did your B-17 have?

Here is one of AR’s tales of war:

1. At what point did I say he was some Medal of Honor recipient type who spent WWII killing platoons of Nazis? When did I say he was even a particularly brave war correspondent? I said he served and that he had combat time. You have not refuted either one.

2. Are you saying someone has only served if they've seen combat repeatedly? How many times?

3. When was your combat time, again?

Good idea. Except I was given a lifetime exemption from jury duty long ago for being too conservative. ;-)

(j/k, it was for asthma)

Actually, I probably shouldn't be making a joke about this, should I? Love your neighbor as yourself, forgive me as I have forgiven others, etc... And I am going to be needing some serious forgiveness someday. Like today, tomorrow and the next day, for the rest of my life. So, yikes, I definitely don't want to be making jokes about the Lord's teachings and commandments. That might be a worse sin than anything Rooney ever said.

So I'll say a sincere prayer for him, sooner rather than later. Not that I'll be doing it just for my own sake, but Rooney's too. Gotta keep that in mind. Another one of those mysteries of the Bible. If we don't do it, who will? Certainly not his atheist friends.

I can understand ilk like Rooney not liking Patton. But to say he was over rated is ignorent. What the hell did Rooney know about generalling anyway?

I suspect that despite what Rooney might say to the contrary, his dislike of Patton was directly attributable to Patton's political views on the Soviets and not his generalship.

At this point the most extravagant help we could be to him, would be as a drop of water. Still worth doing in a way, but he worked hard to get where he is now and an alternative was always open to him.

No such thing as 'minor surgery' on a 92-year-old.

With ObamaCare, there is no such thing as "surgery" for a 92-year-old.

Rooney must have had a "Cadillac" health insurance plan to get surgery at his age.

So, what kind of surgery could that have been, that someone would perform it on a 92-year-old media star? And during the Michael Jackson manslaughter trial, too?

And one that CBS won't disclose, citing privacy requests from the family?

My guess is that Rooney went for a Botox injection, for some upcoming award show where he was going to be featured. Either that, or he was getting a face lift, not like the one that Nancy Pelosi didn't get.
