Aloha again Connie! ((HUGS))

What a week it's been but luckily next week starts an hour later come Monday ......not that it'll make any difference. Like Arizona, there's no DST over here but I'll still have to adjust to the rest of the country....I'll just have that extra hour to do so.

You betcha those cute young wahines scored all those sugary treats and scored big on Halloween and I heard more than I needed to know about kids and the sugar rush from their daddy!

Funny, he never complained of that when he was a kid?

Webb tried singing, and his characterization of his album, “Jim Webb Sings Jim Webb Tunes”, is that it was produced “by a bunch of ruffians from some old demos of mine and tarted up to sound like ‘MacArthur Park’. It was quite a piece of crap and was received with great anticipation and crushing disappointment at the radio level.” Out of respect for Webb and the Canteen, I won’t post anything from that disk.

The very first record the young Jimmy Webb had purchased was “Turn Around, Look at Me”, recorded by Glen Campbell in 1961. Webb received a wonderful tribute when his earliest favorite singer recorded the song he had written for Johnny Rivers.

Glen Campbell: “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”

Webb’s next project was at Lou Adler’s Dunhill Records, where he produced and wrote all the songs for an album by Richard Harris titled “A Tramp Shining”. This was not so much a concept album, but a compendium of Webb songs. With all the countercultural things going on in popular music, Webb understood that the times were passing him by. This was his first attempt at staying current.

”Didn’t We”

”Paper Chase”

”Name of My Sorrow”

”Lovers Such as I”

”In the Final Hours”

”MacArthur Park”

”MacArthur Park” was commissioned by the Association, who took one look at this multiple movement monstrosity and declined to record it. It ended up here. (Note that Harris sings it as “MacArthur’s Park”, which is incorrect.) If this is one of the Cynthia songs, it constitutes a declaration of independence from his obsession with the woman who had given him so much grief. At the time it was considered a masterpiece, and Webb won a Grammy for it in 1968, along with “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman”.
Today, after 43 years, it doesn’t wear so well. It comes across as rather pretentious, overblown and self-indulgent. A modern listener would react to the opening lines and ask, “What the hell is he singing about?”

”Dancing Girl”

”If You Must Leave My Life”

”A Tramp Shining”
