That always seems to happen in the major cities of any state, seems the leftist values are concentrated in them.

“The men, a former professional basketball player and a lawyer...”

“and a lawyer” - there’s the source of the problem.

Hang the alwyer for what he is and does, and hang the basketball clown ongeneral principles.

OOPS! My mistake. I didn’t realize they were both black and therefore members of a priviliged class, allowed to be crude, rude, lewd, and also allowed to be all purpose Gimmie Pigs.

Damn Yankees!

(not saying the men in question were Yankees, but rather the influx of Yankees and the culture of the North have been the ruination of the South)

"Dana Mason, who teaches second grade in Birmingham, says manners have been at the lowest level she has seen in her 36 years in the classroom. Parents who move South tell her they don’t want their children to learn to say “yes, sir” or “yes, ma’am.” Too demeaning, they say.

Well, there's one source of the problem...

Women want equality until it doesn’t suit them. Then they revert to stating that men should be “gentlemen”. I say tell the women to go take a hike while they support ERA, NOW and affirmative action. Manners used to be important until women wanted things both ways.

Oh my goodness, I live in Palm Beach County FL. The rudest men on the planet as far as I can tell. If I open a door to go in or out, some man will about knock me over to get thru first. (ok, not every man, but enough of them to really be irritating). It always surprises me when we go back home to TX and NM on vacation and all of the men without fail open doors for me and are polite and smile. Man do I miss that here. Oh, and btw, I always thank men (or women) who hold a door or do anything else kind —I figure it encourages more kind behavior.

Have been to the Tavern many times. It is a very popular eatery. Plenty of cultural diversity so it just boiled down to two guys who did not want to give up their seats at the bar. Honestly, if you have to ask someone to do it why bother? Its still a semi free country.

We decided in the 70s that we are all equal. And half the time if you act graciously to strange women they are offended.

Such a shame. I was always quite impressed with the genteel manners demonstrated by folks in Savannah, GA, and in nearby areas of South Carolina and Florida.

If those were white women, and the seated men were black, I’m sure they offered to let them sit on their laps.....look around today.

I believe there is a decline. Holding a door for anyone behind you, or for someone about to exit is something I was taught to do. These days young men don’t even have the courtesy of saying thank you.

The men, a former professional basketball player and a lawyer, also happen to be black. The women are white. The men’s lawyers argued that the Tavern at Phipps used a policy wrapped in chivalry as a cloak for discriminatory racial practices.

Yet another example of behavior from the "Entitlement" class!

My, my, such a dilemma for liberals. Who to side with?

Manners or just a marketing gimmick to get as many people in the bar as possible and make it attractive to people walking by?

I'd probably give up my seat if asked. Who wouldn't prefer a table and free food to sitting at the bar?

But I could understand a 50-year-old broken-down ex-athlete being peeved at giving up his place for a twentysomething woman who just walked in.

Age may be as important as sex or race here, and those who resent bossy, officious people may see something presumptuous, meddlesome, or intrusive in the restaurant policy. It's their property, sure, but some patrons do take offense at managements that are too interfering.

The basketball player, Joe Barry Carroll, was born in Arkansas and went to high school in Colorado and college in Indiana. Presumably his parents were Southerners.

The lawyer, Joseph Seth Shaw, went to Oglethorpe University before Howard University Law School. It's hard to say for sure, but I could almost bet he wasn't Northern-raised.
