If someone accused me of this; I would never “pay them to go away” if it was false.
I would go at them full force and take them on. I would care less what it cost.
If you are innocent, but pay someone off; it would always come back to you.
Take the ba$tards on for making something up would be the way to go.
I am the same way. I would take a parking ticket to the Supreme Court if I thought it was untrue.
