Texas Gov. Rick Perry raised some eyebrows and questions about his sobriety with an unusually expressive speech to a conservative group in Manchester, N.H., on Friday. In the speech, Perry ditched his typically reserved style and instead employed "the sort of tics, facial contortions, mimes, and muggings that one would expect from a comic performer," says Thomas Lane at Talking Points Memo. The media scuttlebutt is largely based on an anonymously posted YouTube compilation of "highlights" from the speech (watch the clip below), but even some in attendance were perplexed. "It was different," Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas said. Another GOP operative said it reminded him of Democrat Howard Dean's race-ending "scream" in 2004. Perry's campaign's response? The speech simply proves that Perry is "passionate about the issues he talks about."
The reaction: Perry's performance was "truly bizarre," says Libby Spencer at The Impolitic. "He comes off as pretty well drunk. Or drugged." Yes, and though it's not a crime to be "pretty publicly lit," it's almost certainly bad politics for a presidential hopeful, says Andrew Sullivan at The Daily Beast. Well, I doubt he's drunk, says Josh Feldman at Mediaite. But his exuberance is "fun to watch." I bet "Alec Baldwin will appreciate the material for his next Perry impersonation. Look, "we're not saying that he's definitely drunk," says Max Read at Gawker, "we're just saying, watch the whole thing" and judge for yourself. Have a look:
That is the Obama media being cited there, the all lib&homo media there, so f’m.
The GOPs Teresa Kerry?
After watching that, you could only hope he was drunk. If that's how he expresses "passion" for issues, as his campaign would have you believe, imagine the potential SOTU addresses.
BTW, it's probably not a good idea to invoke The Alamo and "victory or death" in a campaign. How'd that work out for those at The Alamo?
He’s not drunk or drugged. He’s just animated and in a good mood. Doesn’t anyone in the media ever get tired head and get the giggles?
It happens.
His speech isn’t slurred. Although this speech does appear to be bizarre.
Oh well...
He definitely looks drunk. His behavior and speech has been radically modified.
The media scuttlebutt is largely based on an anonymously posted YouTube compilation of “highlights” from the speech..
If you had a speck of decency, you’d be ashamed of your reprehensible comments on Perry threads. Since you don’t and aren’t, we’re left to conclude that your unconscionable vitriol is not simply the result of heated political rhetoric during primary season but is rather part of your character.
You’ve crossed over from political to personal.
I look forward to the day you are zotted.

He’s relaxed and considers himself among friends. If he’s “buzzed” as some have said, then he’s good at remembering a long speech and very good at getting his points across while “buzzed.”
Drunk? Perhaps. Weird? Yes. Fatal? No. Not the end of the world. But a bit odd, though.
We have too many little league candidates playing in a big leauge ball park. Sad.
If you had ever met Anita Perry, you’d know how ridiculous that statement is. She’s small, quiet and looks as though she’d like to fade away.
I’ve only talked to her once, at a fund-raiser here in New Braunfels. She was gracious to my 10-year old granddaughter and we (a doctor and a nurse) discussed the pain of wearing high heels and the merits of having little cushions glued into them.
You mock a man who loves and respects his wife, who doesn’t find it threatening to tell the world that he seeks her council and that she gives him moral advice - such as “you have a duty.”
(When someone makes me mad, the meanest thing I can think of that won’t make me feel guilty - or have to go to work if I’m on call - is to wish that their feet hurt. How do your feet feel?)
It looks like an SNL skit. Presidential? I think not!
I don’t think he’s drunk, but I don’t think he’s presidential, and I don’t think he’s going to be winning any debates and I don’t think he’s going to win the nomination.
And I don’t think he’s going to take enough votes away from Cain to tip the nomination to Romney.
This is now Cain’s nomination to lose. It worries me that Cain is unsteady on his feet — not unsteady in the manner of Perry in this speech, but just a little too quick to speak without thinking, which can be fatal to someone who already carries the burden of “inexperienced”.
But whatever Cain does or doesn’t do, Perry is out of it. Watch this speech. Forget about “drink or drugs” and just ask yourself: is this man presidential.
I have a weak-spot for Perry. I always have. But I watched this speech, several times, looking for “presidential”. It’s not there.
The longer this nomination process goes on the more convinced it is going to be Gingrich. Cain is done. There will be a number of other women come out of the woodwork. (just my guess). Perry is WAY done. Romney will not get the republican nod. This is going to Gingrich.
