Veteran Scott Olsen Could Be The First Person To Die At A Wall Street Protest
Business Insider ^ | 10/27/2011 | Linette Lopez and Robert Johnson

Posted on 10/27/2011 8:47:22 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Scott Olsen survived two tours of Iraq, but his life could be over after being critically injured by a police projectile at Occupy Oakland, The Guardian reports. He's 24 years old.

As we know, Occupy Oakland got incredibly ugly this week as police tried to remove protesters from their camp in front of City Hall by using tear gas, fire crackers, and rubber bullets.

Olsen suffered a head injury on Tuesday night, and is now in critical condition in Oakland's Highland Hospital. Jay Finneburgh, a photographer on the scene, managed to witness and take pictures of the incident. Police policy specifically prohibits the firing of these weapons at a person's head.

"This poor guy was right behind me when he was hit in the head with a police projectile. He went down hard and did not get up," Finneburgh wrote.

At first, Doctors told Olsen's friends that he was in critical, but stable condition. Now they're being told that his skull has been fractured and his brain is beginning to swell. Neurologists are in the process of determining whether or not he will require surgery.

According to Keith Shannon, a friend who served with Olsen during his time in Iraq, Olsen was hit in the head with a tear gas or smoke canister, and he has the scar on his head to prove it.

Meanwhile, Oakland police admit that they used tear gas and baton rounds, but have denied the use of flash bang grenades. Protesters, however, say they saw police use them, and the more video that comes out, the harder it is to believe the police.

Olsen hails from Wisconsin, served tours of Iraq in 2006 and 2007, and is active in both Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War.

semantic, we live in a constitutional republic. We allow ourselves to be governed with our consent, because theoretically, the laws passed by a representative government were created and passed by representatives whom we elected.

In this way, even if we didn’t vote for a government official, or we disagree with a law that is passed, we consent to the rule of law, because without it, we have anarchy.

If the public ordinances (supposedly put in place by people we elect) decree that malls close at 23:00, then if we disagree with that prdianance, we can work to change it through established mechanisms. If we fail to change anyone’s mind, we have three choices: Live with it, break the law, or move to another locality that has different ordinances or no ordinances.

There are no other choices.

Freedom to “peaceably assemble” is subject to interpretation. I submit that these mentally deficient people, banging on drums, defecating in the open, impeding the passage of people and vehicles and making a general ruckus are not “peaceably” assembling. If lived or worked right near there, I would feel that way twice over.

Because it sounds like something being good or bad is relative to people or situations.

Of course it is.

If a cop shoots a kid sitting in his bed during a no-knock raid gone wrong - that's bad.

If a cop shoots a gang banger who is assaulting a old woman - that's good.

See - a cop shooting a civilian can be a good thing or a bad thing, relative to the people and the situation.

I don't really even get what you're trying to say.

Where does the rest of the public's safe use and enjoyment of these public spaces fit in?

Cite please? My current copy of the BoR seems to be woefully outdated since I cannot seem to locate any specific reference to your post. Perhaps you can tell me what part of the 1A is subject to no-camping, time restrictions?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

OK, now to use your very words above, how come they don't apply to the 2A? Or do they? It seems you would approve of the police murdering the vet @ the Las Vegas Costco because his 2A rights were trumped by "the rest of the public's safe use and enjoyment of these public spaces fit in". You know, guns are dangerous and all that.

My parents taught me not to riot or throw things at cops, nor stand next to or even in the vicinity of people taunting cops.

I don't know about that blanket statement. In our parents generation this was generally true, but this is Obama's brave new world, and there may come a day soon when good Americans are forced to do this just to throw off the police state. However, if you are going to do this, don't act all shocked and confused when you wind up with a major head injury.

Not so ,does not matter your rating, all Veterans from Previous Wars qualify, unless rules are different for Iraq Veterans, and I think not, see them there all the time. Do not ask their rating. Never heard that 40% stuff.

I don’t have much use for bottom feeding scum.

I'm glad you posted that - it's truly a thing of beauty, and perhaps to remain on FR's servers for all time for all to see. Bravo.

But, just to be clear, since you "don’t have much use for bottom feeding scum", that trumps the 1A, right?

Now, in terms of the 2A, the left "doesn't have much use for right-wing scum, therefore it trumps the 2A, right?

Seems that fewer people means fewer laws, ordinances, and police. I live in a town with around 150 people. We have a county cop roll through town maybe one a week, we burn brush in our yards, do a surprising amount of construction without permits. We do pretty much as we please because we hold to certain societal standards that don't impede or offend our neighbors to any intolerable extent. Frankly, I like hearing the church bell every sunday morning.

Once again, let’s review the 2A in light of the Las Vegas police report. Since they are correct, and the vet represented a threat, they had to murder him to protect the public, correct?

The pos cops love this.

They get to play with their toys, make OT, make fake a few injuries and go out on disability for a few months with phantom back pain, give each other commendations for “bravery” in the line of duty, etc etc.

Sorry - these cops are disgusting. The OWS are a bunch of morons and fools, but these cops are way out of line.

He's out of the military and unless he had more than 40% disability he wouldn't be eligible for VA treatment.

Unless things have changed since 2003 (which is when I had personal experience with this), if you are a veteran of a combat zone and you have ANY disability rating, you qualify for lifetime VA treatment.

I am betting the canister you see in front of him is the one that hit him. It probably hit him and then dropped to the ground in front of him.

So you are of the belief that the 1A is subject to interpretation by the courts? That is, if 50.1% agree to enact certain limitations, we're all good, right?

Do you feel the same way about the 2A? Gun registration, no carry/transport, etc are all ok because our 'representatives' passed laws?

The POS worthless, scum sucking protesters deserved what they got. Throw rocks at me and I don’t think you’d be happy with the outcome.

You’re the one who is disgusting.

This is getting too easy, but I'll use it again:

The police reports that came out of the Las Vegas Costco shooting assert that the perp did not listen nor obey their commands to drop the weapon/lay prone.

They're correct, right?

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with them, peacefully protesting should not be a capital crime.

Yeah whatever. Can’t wait till this happens at the next tea party even and cops are shooting tear gas at people.

BTW - the cops love this - they get to kill the taxpayers with OT, phoney disability claims, pension enhancements, play with their toys, etc.

sorry - you may cheer this on, I don’t , because guess what - its going to be used on the Tea party next.

Don’t really care what you think.

Ah, but I sincerely care about what you think - by proxy. Because, my fine fellow, if you represent even a tiny minority of people in this country that believe core Constitutional rights are subject to one's personal opinion, then my portfolio investments can only grow.

You see, I'm fully invested in the police state. I'm staying long as long as people like you support the status quo. It makes no difference to me that you're a mere foot soldier in the service of my wealth.

What's important to me is to read the public mood. If I see even a hint of possible remorse and/or re-consideration of yours and other opinions @ FR on this matter, I will move quietly to close out my positions.
