Senator Charles Grassley and Congressman Darrell Issa have expanded their investigation of gunrunning to Mexico by asking Attorney General Eric Holder to provide detailed information relating to the murder of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata earlier this year.
In a letter sent to Holder Tuesday, Grassley and Issa asserted that the attorney general had taken months to respond to the senators initial March 1 inquiry about a gun recovered at the Zapata crime scene in Mexico that had been purchased in 2010 at a Fort Worth, TX gun show.
This column discussed that case more than six months ago. The gun was sold by a firearms retailer to a suspect identified as Otilio Osorio on Oct. 10, 2010. He turned out to be one of three men finally bagged by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives after the gun trace was conducted following Zapatas murder in mid-February.
But according to the Grassley/Issa letter, ATF was on to this guy, his brother, Ranferi and their pal, Kelvin Morrison, as early as Nov. 9, 2010. Now, thanks to a request from Texas Sen. John Cornyn, Grassley and Issa are digging.
Here is a list of what they want as the scope of the investigation expands from just Operation Fast and Furious to what appears to have been a similarly-run operation in Texas:
(1) Did ATF make any effort to question Ranferi Osorio or Kelvin Morrison after trafficked firearms were traced back to them on September 17? If not, why not?(2) Why werent any of these individuals arrested in November in connection with the undercover drop-off of weapons on November 9?
(3) Was any surveillance maintained on the Osorio brothers or Morrison by any DOJ component, including ATF and DEA,
