THE Royal Australian Navy is investigating an uncharted wreck in Papua New Guinea, believed to be a submarine, discovered in a joint operation with the New Zealand Navy.
(Excerpt) Read more at news.com.au ...
The sub appears to be at the bottom of the harbor in Rabaul which probability means it is Japanese.
Good read is Scorpion Down by Ed Offley. He offers that the Scorpion was sunk by the Sovs in retaliation for our alledged sinking of the K-129 and both governments agreed to keep the incident quiet.
He touches only a little on the Navy’s finding that it may have been a hot torpedo.
I have also read that a suspect was the garbage disposal unit was unsecure and boat took on water.
To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack.
Thanks, now I gotta get that book too. :)
Wrong sub, bub:

Hopefully there isn’t a pinging noise coming from it like in the Twilight Zone episode The Thirty-Fathom Grave.

IIRC, didn’t then recently discover the USS Wahoo?

More likely, yes, but it is possible, it’s a US boat and I thought that was the possibility more likely to interest people here.
