The GOP could face a revolt from within its tea party grassroots base if it nominates an establishment candidate without true conservative, anti-big government values, one of America’s leading conservative pundits tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.
Specifically, columnist and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan told Newsmax that the nomination of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the architect of a state insurance plan that many say inspired Obamacare, could prompt the tea party movement to form a third party.
“It’s a real possibility because the tea party folks and the Republican conservatives and social conservatives and others are very apprehensive of Mitt Romney and they don’t feel he is really one of us,” Buchanan told Newsmax.
First of all, I have serious doubts Romney gets the nomination. He has not surged above mid-20’s all year. Romney actually had a better chance in 2008 because Romneycare was not a big issue in 2008. After Obamacare was passed into law on March 19, 2010, Romneycare has come into focus as the model used by Obamacare, mandates and all. Romney could’nt even beat a pudgy, short and balding old maverick dude in 2008. Fair or not the Mormon thing is another negative factor in real world. Romney will lose Iowa, SC, FL. He may eake out a win in NH. That is not exactly a thunderball of momentum in making.

I hope Romney isn’t the nominee, and so does Buchanan.

btw, last I checked Michele Bachmann is at 5%, and I believe she still has a shot.

No, I am not saying that. One of the candidates now running will get the nomination. We need to unite behind the Romney alternative and run with that. It will be an unpalatable choice for many.
Still vote, just not for Romney. I’m sure you have other things to vote for in 2012. At least your representative.
Is one of your senators up? Governor? Your state legislature is up in the House and maybe that Senate district.
I think the grassroots is going to turn out so big for these elections more. In 2010 about 975 Democrats lost their offices accross the country.
In 2012 it could be bigger to the point the GOP nominee will get to the WH on their coattails and not the other way around.
They’ll be in charge of the agenda then and Romney, as president, be damned. That’s the only positive thing I can come up with concerning Mitt.
For clarification, we need to unite behind the alternative to Romney. 3rd run in 2012 will ensure Obama’s election.
The Republican party was a third party that split from the Whigs and in less than ten years won the presidency.
Of course, we got a civil war and lost a lot of freedoms even under Lincoln, but at least they achieved their abjective, albeit through circumstances, of ending slavery.
But even back then the Dems didn’t like their slaves taken away.
This country will not survive another 4 years of Obama and even Romney is a better pick. I would prefer Herman Cain myself, but will support who ever runs against what is sitting in the Whitehouse now.
This notion of sitting out the election or supporting a third party candidate is just a vote for Obama.
Grow up, I don't like Romney either, but I'm not willing to hand these Marxist slime another 4 years because I would rather throw a tantrum because my guy didn't get the nomination.

There’s another solution if Romney is nominated. Everyone join the third party. Those who vote for Romney will just be helping re-elect obama.
Romney/ Cain works for me. I cant imagine us notclosing ranks and supporting the republican candidate even if its Romney.

I can’t say a whole lot about Bachmann, but Santorum is the darling of the liberal GOP establishment here in PA and the National Right To Life Committee arm of the GOP national political machine.
I sincerly believe that Santorum’s real purpose is to divide conservative votes so Mitt Romney can win.
I’m not intimidated by that - perot was nothing - he was a business man with a better way - wow! where did I hear that before?

If these guys had something in them - he should be gone or polling in single digits, already! Remember, Cain ain’t going touch him, MB is his buffer, Paul don’t give a flip, Perry tries and no one backs him up. Santorum scored and maybe that’s the only one that has the backbone - he may as well, his numbers are almost non existent - His last hooray -perhaps, he’ll do it for the country! Bottom line - it’s all about them and them looking good - it’s not about our country to them. I’m not pulling a lever so some wimp can get in the WH who didn’t want to fight but wanted things handed to him. Bring on the 3rd party - like I said I’m ready.

I can unite behind a Cain, Gingrich, Bachmann, Santorum, Perry, Huntsman, perhaps even Ron Paul, but I can’t unite behind a guy whose past governing positions are closer to Obama’s than they are the other GOP candidates. Sure, he talks a different game now, but like Obama, Romney’s words have an expiration date. For this reason, you don’t really know what you’ll get if he’s elected. But most likely he would line up politically with his buddy and point man from the Mass Senate-Scott Brown.
Brown ran as a conservative (backed by the Tea Party), then quickly proceeded to become one of the 2 or 3 most liberal senators. We can’t afford a guy like that at POTUS-not with our current condition. If Romney is the nominee, I believe going 3rd party is well worth the risk.
