AP) SIRTE, Libya — Libyan fighters have overrun the last positions of Moammar Gadhafi loyalists holding out in the city of Sirte and the revolutionaries now have all of the ousted leader's hometown within their hands.

Reporters on the scene say the final push to capture the remaining pro-Gadhafi positions began around 8 a.m. on Thursday and was over after about 90 minutes. Just before the assault, about five carloads of loyalists tried to flee the enclave down the coastal highway but were killed by revolutionaries.

Revolutionaries began searching homes and buildings looking for any Gadhafi fighters who may be hiding there.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE.

Anti-Gaddafi forces ‘seize Sirte’

Libya’s transitional government soldiers have taken full control of Sirte, the last city where Gaddafi loyalists had remained holed up, eyewitnesses and reporters say.

They say the final push lasted about 90 minutes on Thursday morning.

Government soldiers have been engaged in a fierce battle for Sirte - Col Muammar Gaddafi’s hometown - for weeks.

Some Gaddafi loyalists are still resisting government forces in the town of Bani Walid, south-east of Tripoli.

Troops loyal to the National Transitional Council (NTC) had been facing heavy resistance from snipers in the centre of Sirte, about 360km (220 miles) east of the capital.

But on Thursday morning, the head of government operations in the eastern half of the city told Reuters news agency: “Sirte has been liberated.”

“There are no Gaddafi forces any more,” Col Yunus al-Abdali added. “We are now chasing his fighters who are trying to run away.”

At least 16 pro-Gaddafi fighters were captured, along with ammunition and trucks loaded with weapons, the Associated Press reported.

Al Jazeera is reporting at this time that NATO is also attacking that 100 car convoy and that people in Sirte say that Gaddaffi and his son are in that convoy, the latter is unconfirmed.

The convoy is on the road to Misrata and is being engaged on different parts of the road, anti-Gadaffi forces.

Big Media was just telling us yesterday how great Hussein has been at foreign policy, but the lagging economy, bad “Congress” etc. has brought his polls down, and the media cares deeply.

Yes I heard that and it seems that it may be true as it is coming for so many sources. Libyan TV, and other high officials are confirming the same thing. I think they want to wait until the NTC officially report it.

NATA could have destroyed the convoy but just stopped it to leave it to the fighters on the ground to capture the high profile targets. They want the target alive.

Just heard that Gadaffi has been “critically injured” - another is saying he has died.

I reported some of this earlier:

Now we get to watch the new blood bath by the crazy leftist Islamic supporters, next step anarchy as each tribe vias for control.

NATO and Europe needed this for their economies.

What a joke.

I just heard on Al Jazeera that as the commander was telling them that Gaddaffi had been captured he was handed a piece of paper and changed that to killed.

What happened between the capture and the killing.

Tried to escape no doubt - or resisting arrest etc.

No doubt Mr. Nobel Peace Prize will be spiking the ball and taking credit.

From another piece, "Gaddafi" tried to surrender according to a named witness and was murdered.
