Iraq's Sadr calls for full US withdrawal
Press TV ^ | October 19th 2011 | Staff

Head of Iraq's Sadr movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, has called for the complete withdrawal of all American troops from the country by the end of the year.

Speaking in the holy city of Najaf on Wednesday, the cleric rejected any form of US presence in the country, as Washington and Baghdad are discussing keeping a limited number of US troops as military trainers in Iraq.

Sadr said the presence of US military trainers in Iraq beyond the Dec. 31 deadline is an ''organized occupation''.

He also dismissed any negotiation with the US before the full withdrawal of all foreign soldiers and the payment of compensation to the families of Iraqis killed by US troops.

Washington has been pressing Baghdad to agree to keep thousands of its troops beyond the 2011 deadline. It also wants the remaining troops to be granted immunity from prosecution.

There are currently about 4,700 US soldiers deployed in Iraq. According to a 2008 security accord, known as the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), all US troops are required to leave the country by the end of 2011.

Under pressure from Washington, Iraqi political leaders recently agreed to allow some of the US forces to stay longer for 'training' purposes, but refused to shield them from prosecution.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also rejected the US proposal that 3,400 of the troops remain in the country, saying “we do not need such a large number.”

Over one million Iraqis have been killed in the US-led invasion and occupation of the country since 2003, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.

The withdrawal of all soldiers is probably the only thing I will ever agree with this POS on.

“.... and the payment of compensation to the families of Iraqis killed by US troops.”

Ah yes, reparations. I’m sure Obama could get his head around that idea.

I don’t know how many Iraqis have died since the start of the war, so Sadr may not be lying about the number itself.

He’s just not mentioning how many of those is simply Muslim-killing-Muslim.

According to a recently leaked report prepared by the US military (basically the ruling authorities in the country since the invasion and in the best position to know) estimate the number of dead at around 100k, 75k or so civilians.

There are other estimates almost all of which are far closer to this figure than the one million figure cited here. BTW, the 1 million figure is the result of a survey of households in Iraq. How a useful figure can be derived from heresay is anyone's guess.

Cannot believe this guy was able to make it through the last 8 years alive. Now he is sitting pretty with a CIC who would not dare get rid of him. Sadr should have been gone a long time ago.

Is that number civilian casualties, caused by military action, or is that number including sectarian killings as well as deaths as a result of military action?

Is that fat turd still around? I we killed a million, you can bet that the fast majority of them were terrorists. They could have gotten us to go home long ago if they had simply stopped fighting us, but they are to ingrained with hatred to do that.

Whenever we withdraw the Islamic clerics and other hardcore Muslims will take over. By it's new constitution, Iraq is already an Islamic republic.

The nest government may even be worse than Saddam.

So, 4,500 U.S. troops will will have died for nothing. Thousands more have had their lives permanently altered because of serious war wounds. Several trillion dollars will have been spent.

We need to limit our military action to those that are in our country's best interests rather than every hair-brained “nation building” or “police action” scheme that Bill Kristol and the rest of the neocons come up with that results in other peoples’ children getting killed.

You actually call Dubya out on the above idiotic policy when he was in office?
