With respect to my Texan friends, it’s cultural. Texans value a slower paced speaking style, which sometimes comes across to “Yanks” as slow and plodding. I’ve found many Texans are very different one-on-one than in this kind of public group setting.
Agreed about TX pause...I lived in TN and thot some people talked slow, but they were not thinking slow.
