She's a 40-year-old mother of eight, with a ninth child due soon. The family homestead in a Burundi village is too small to provide enough food, and three of the children have quit school for lack of money to pay required fees.
"I regret to have made all those children," says Godelive Ndageramiwe. "If I were to start over, I would only make two or three."
At Ahmed Kasadha's prosperous farm in eastern Uganda, it's a different story.
"My father had 25 children I have only 14 so far, and expect to produce more in the future," says Kasadha, who has two wives. He considers a large family a sign of success and a guarantee of support in his old age.
By the time Ndageramiwe's ninth child arrives, and any further members of the Kasadha clan, the world's population will have passed a momentous milestone. As of Oct. 31, according to the U.N. Population Fund, there will be 7 billion people sharing Earth's land and resources.
In Western Europe, Japan and Russia, it will be an ironic milestone amid worries about low birthrates and aging populations. In China and India, the two most populous nations, it's an occasion to reassess policies that have already slowed once-rapid growth.

This Paul Erlich crap continues to thrive in the communist world, doesn't it? Usually it comes from criminal regimes that starve and illegally imprison their populace.
Calling Robert Malthus
I wish all of these people concerned about overpopulation would “take one for the team” and off themselves.
No problem with folks having as many kids as they want. The problem comes when the UN steals my money to support their 25 kids.
Watch the libs say there’s too many people which is causing starvation, climate change and polluting the earth. Their solution, Soylent Green.
I work with a pretty bright software development guy that is absolutely convinced that the population is soon to be unsustainable. I just nod my head and think to myself how can a smart guy like this believe that crap. Unbelievable.
I love how Ted Turner, a father of five, advocates adopting China’s ‘one child’ policy.
Dr Paul Ehrlich assured the country, in 1968, that this could not happen. There would be devistation, wide-spread famine, war and pestilence.
So, which socialist-environmentalist do you believe????
Don’t worry!
The various U.N. Population Control groups, Int’l Planned Parenthood, et al, will redouble their efforts to abort and kill the 3rd world populations through their eugenic policies.
Aided by the EPA and HHS here in America, they will continue to pretend humans are the scourge of the earth, while ignoring the oppressive governments causing the malnourishment and poverty.
It takes a lot of farmland to feed those 7 billion people all hypothetically living in Texas.
“Smart” people believe a lot of lies.
Widespread famine has never been caused by natural factors - famines are always man-made. The root causes are always Gov’t policy (intended or not) or war. Drought, flood, or locusts are merely the trigger.
A nation that protects the rights of the person and his property will never starve.
Burundi’s problem is Government. They can abort all the babies or euthanize all the adults they want, but unless they recognize this fact, their people will still be as poor, or poorer. There will just be fewer of them.
Well said! And in 1968 the Earth held an astounding 3 billion people. And ironically, I think that the standard of living has increased a wee bit since then. The only places that it hasn’t is in places that have ALWAYS been communist/socialist/dictatorial hell-holes. Even communist China is better off now than in the ‘60s. God help the USA if they ever go full capitalist.
I don’t see overpopulation in any nation with secure private property rights.
Well, let's see: 288,581 sq miles of inhabitable land in Texas
7.6 billion arable sq miles: thisfrom a tree-hugger website too)
Equals . . . ready?
26,612 sq miles of arable land per person.
Plenty of land to grow my food
. . . . even Mooch-elle couldn't eat all the food grown on that much land . . . I guess.
I heard that Ethiopia, prior to the communist takeover (1973), was one of the world's leading exporters of grain.
Along comes the communist takeover that everyone in Hollyweird couldn't wait for . . . and voila! Worst yearly weather they ever had . . . please send food for our people (few of which ever got any).
Remember those "Hands across America" spectacles led by that libtard bozo in England, and "We are the World" crap from Michael Jackson, et al? Hardly any of the money ginned up by those phonies ever made it to the people.
I would happily send a lot of angry feminists to the Muslim world to enforce vasectomies. Decreasing the Muslim population would help world peace. And if the feminists didn’t achieve their objective but witnessed the oppression of Muslim women, they might better appreciate and defend the freedoms they themselves have.
