There is now way that a plan that taxes seniors would be put out there!
What I’m *hoping* they do is make it so that NOBODY pays taxes on the first $25,000.
It stays fair, but helps out the poor and middle class.
Now if people can get it through their thick heads that they won’t be paying MORE with the 9% sales tax, we’ll be in business.
You assume that those hidden costs won’t remain hidden in the price in the form of corporate profits. I’m not sure why you would think that this is a safe assumption. I guess cuz Herman says so.
So lets recap.

You don't know that. Nobody knows that at this point. How many states pay State sales tax on those items?
None of us knows how, or to which items/services, the hypothetical National (aka Federal) sales tax would be applied to, because it is not even a proposal at this point -- it is just an idea. It is a starting point. It is a talking point.
There is nothing to suggest, one way or the other, whether the sales tax in the 999 plan would be applied to groceries, medicine, or medical services. We simply do not know enough about it at this point to answer that.
Everyone who is so terrified of it should let this play out a little longer so we can see more details. At this point, 999 is neither something to rally behind nor rail against. It is merely a talking point.
The only thing 999 tells us at this point is that Mr. Cain is interested in addressing the real, and huge, problem of our current tax code. HOW that problem gets addressed is yet to be seen.
A few scant political hard cores is far from what will hand a victory to Cain. It will take major political experience, as well as huge amounts of money and organization that Cain is not even close to having. There is simply not enough time left. (Outside of a miracle.)
That sounds a lot like the FairTax. “prebate” the tax money for essentials that the poor would have to pay.
You guys have to understand that one big reason that Cain sees this plan as ‘revenue neutral’ is because he’s seeig a massive up-tick in the economy. We’ll be taking in less taxes per person and per company, but revenue will go UP with the BOOM!
How do you figure that? Lately Perry has been down with the 2nd tier candidates in some polls and the lowest of the top tier. So how is it that HE would keep Perry from beating Romney? And if that were true, couldn’t the opposite also be true? Maybe it’s Perry that’s keeping Cain from beating Romney.
It’s speculation at this point, though I think it was more likely when Perry first got in. He’s been responsible for his own drop. He was an unknown quantity to most people, myself included but a president needs to be glib and able to think on his/her feet. For many, his performance in the debates was our first introduction to how he handles himself under pressure. As people have gotten to know him (as with the others in the race) people have gravitated away from or towards him.
Shouldn’t it be the candidates impressing us enough to support want to them? Blaming Cain supporters is disingenuous. They have viable reasons for believing their candidate can win the nomination as well. The midterms saw a huge influx of outsiders into congress and with varied kinds of experience in the private sector. I don’t think any of us are done cleaning house. I don’t particularly care if someone “sounds” like a politician. Personally, I’d rather have someone who has enough experience in the private sector to know what the government to do to keep the heck out of the way. Cain’s executive experience means he knows how to run a corporation. Running a government is no different and requires the exact same skill set.

only 34% of seniors have their SS benefits taxed anyways. That means that 66% of them are going to get a 9% tax increase on everything they buy.

And yet that is why Texas is doing so well. 1% corporate tax and no income tax. We rely a lot on our sales tax.

RC, I guess I don’t understand what Cain was saying about seniors on social security. I saw him on Huckabee, and I thought he said those on social security would not be affected by the 9% national sales tax. I figured he was going to add an exemption for them or something, something like the exemptions Cain and his economic adviser Rich Lowrie are currently working on to put in place for low income families. I know I’m not misunderstanding the exemptions for low income families because I have that in writing. AS for seniors though... I just HEARD Cain on Huckabee, so I had to rely on what he said, and it did seem somewhat hazy to me, so perhaps I’m wrong about how that national sales tax would affect seniors.
I agree with you that having a saving nation seems at odds with what we’ve been told about economics in our country recently, that our current problems are worse because no one is spending very much if at all possible, causing even more economic problems for recovery. I heard Dave Ramsey say the good part about Cain’s 999 was that it would cause more people to save more instead of spend more. Perhaps we would still spend a little more than we would in today’s society if there were some more jobs and money in the future though too. Can only hope for that.
I’m sorry for not having more info on what Cain said on Huck about seniors. I was pretty sure he said they would not pay the national sales tax, but I could have been wrong in what I thought he said, and I don’t have actual words to that TV interview. I DO know that low income family exemptions for the national sales tax are in the works, and I just posted info on those earlier on this thread.
And as I posted earlier as well, fiscal conservatives need to rise up against those federal enterprise zones and empowerment zones Cain says he is adding to his 999 plan. If we don’t stand up to those, we are showing the world fiscal conservatism isn’t all that important to us after all.

Clairity, what you posted is actually from a completely different poll from a week ago when Romney and Cain were only separated by 1% point in the full poll.

No. They won’t.
With the corporate tax rate dropped to the lowest tax rate in the free world, prices will drop and we may end up paying LESS for an item than we do now.
A large percentage of what you see as the retail price is made of ‘hidden’ taxes. (the FairTax website estimates that it’s about 22% - I’ve seen estimates as high as 50% for certain items)
So are you alright paying massive taxes as long as they’re invisible?
