Herman Cain tested the national spotlight Sunday as the Republican presidential primarys newest front-runner.
Facing tough questions during a 25-minute one-on-one interview on NBCs "Meet the Press," Cain acknowledged that his plan to simplify the tax code would raise taxes for some people and clarified his position that he doesnt believe abortion should be an option in instances of rape and incest.
Scrapping the current federal tax code which he described as a 10-million-word mess would eliminate a host of invisible taxes and eventually reduce prices, Cain said.
Some economists have pointed out that Cains plan would shift the tax burden further from the rich to the poor and middle class.
"Some people will pay more. But most people will pay less," said the former Godfathers Pizza executive and a former chairman of the board of directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City when pressed by host David Gregory about the effects of his tax plan.
Cain said the biggest appeal of his plan is its simplicity. The plan calls for a 9% personal income tax, a 9% corporate tax, and a 9% federal sales tax.
Video game enthusiasts have pointed out that Cains plan is the same tax schedule used in the computer game SimCity 4.
When asked how he would get the "9-9-9" plan through Congress, Cain said he would drum up public support.
The American people understand it and are going to demand it, he said.
Citing the simplicity of his positions and his conservative credentials, Cain said he doesnt think his front-runner status will peter out like other GOP candidates who surged in the polls only to fade away earlier this year.
I don't think Herman Cain will be a flavor of the week," he said.

Is it the Mormon thing then?
Falling for the media meme doesnt help anyone who considers themselves conservative. Prices for all will necessarily drop with Cains plan. Working against it is akin to cutting ones own throat. Cains plan puts those who now vote for Demecrats in a position where they also will not want to increase tax burdens. It puts those who are now takers into a position where they can no longer just take from the producers. This may well be the last chance we get to change who pays and who takes in this country.
I see what’s going on. You’re trying to split the conservative vote so your boy ROMNEY can get elected. We see through you.
We pay property taxes in Texas instead of a state income tax on assessed value — varies on where you live — around 2.6 (Rates per $100.00 value).
We pay a sales tax in Texas — varies depending on where you are — around 8%.
How will Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax change that? He said on Meet the Press that (I think — it was hard to tell) that we must not associate the two — that what the states do was....???
So how about this, try making a case FOR your candidate instead of slimming all the other candidates.
“What do you think introducing sales tax on top of income taxes does?”
You liberals are fine with taxes as long as they’re embedded in the retail price of things and you can’t actually *SEE* them. As soon as taxes are transparent and known to all you bawl and wine about paying your fair share.
You’re paying more than 9% NOW. Nitwit.
Yea, with 10 seconds to go in the interview. Geez, real objective, aren't we? /sarc
Clarity has finally outed herself as a liberal RINO.
She supports a candidate that doesn’t believe in private property rights, parental rights or protecting our citizens from illegal aliens. She will only support a ‘compassionate conservative’. She’s against a tax that’s transparent and FAIR. She spreads disinformation like she took notes right out of the DU playbook.
justsaynomore is right!
Clairity said, “It seem like Cain can’t think of anything about which to criticize Romney.”
Considering the ‘Wall Street Protesters’ (OWP for those who can keep track of acronyms) and the Main Stream Media, a/k/a MSM (again with the acronyms), are making Wall Street Executives look bad without Mr. Cain having to lift a finger.
Just a thought but why should he say more, I believe he will win and then gain Romney’s support., or at least his respect for not cutting him.

Mr. TL and I are on the Cain Train
In other interviews the worst Cain said about Romney is that “he is not a staunch conservative”. Then in an article trumpeting Cain “going after Romney”, the “big attack” consists of “I’m going after Romney only on his economic plan because that’s where he is a little weak,” Does he agree with Romney on everything else, such as Romney’s romneycare and his job killing CO2 regulations?
In theory yes, but remember this? Airlines keeping tax savings for themselves
Where is Cains plan for CUTTING GOVERNMENT?

Second tab down. It’s just an introduction, but I understand Cain has said 10% across the board, with 100% in some departments.
Reduce Government Spending
It is no secret that federal government spending is out of control. They view the American taxpayers as a bottomless piggybank for their wasteful programs and expansion of power. And we the people will not tolerate it any longer.
The massive debt caused by liberal policies will be passed onto our children and grandchildren if we do not stop it. They will be stuck with the tab for the government takeover of health care, industry bailouts and failed stimulus packages. They will be the ones approached with outstretched palms by the Chinese to pay back the billions upon billions we owe them. Each generation of Americans should seek to leave behind a better and more prosperous nation for the next, not saddle them with debt from reckless spending.
Though it might not be politically popular to modernize and eliminate some of our entitlement programs, responsible leaders should be willing to do it all the same. They must be prepared to make tough choices and learn to simply say no. This can only happen when our elected officials stop being politicians and start being leaders. Simply put: there is no Department of Happy in Washington, D.C.
Nothing should be off the table. Every federal agency, every government program and expenditure must be reviewed and revised with a keen eye and a red pen. Leaders should be willing to shrink budgets by target percentages, and those charged with implementing those changes must be held accountable.
And it works! I have served as an executive of several major corporations. When times were tough and money was tight, I asked our employees to cut back drastically, and explained why it was necessary, and they did. We have all had to make difficult decisions in our own household or at our work place. Serious but responsible belt tightening can save businesses, and it can also save our country with the right leadership.
If his Party doesn't control Congress, then not much...
Thank you for that post! His idea on immigration is just so damn right and so full of common sense and reality it smacks of being revolutionary-it is like he is laying out a road for all of us that reflects our foundations. Such a mighty change from what has been going on and depressing us all for so long it feels new. Roots are never new-they just get buried by friggin liberal communists!
You had better get those apples out of the orange crate because someone you are selling this crap to is going to demand a refund!
Are you really Rep. John Conyers? Because your lame attempts to sell your drivel make about as much sense as his attack on those who demanded he read the bill. So in response I say to you and your ilk;
READ THE BOOKS! They were authored by Rep. Linder of Georgia and Neal Boortz. Maybe with those clues it would be much easier to find them than it is for you to find you arshe with both hands.
You liberals are fine with taxes as long as theyre embedded in the retail price of things and you cant actually *SEE* them. As soon as taxes are transparent and known to all you bawl and wine about paying your fair share.
Such as those who would end withholding, and make Nov 1 tax day.
READ THE BOOKS! Simple enough?
READ THE BOOKS! You’ll find all the answers and they won’t be in the table of contents.
Any solutions to a serious problems are going to have their warts. To go in a different direction than the one you’ve been in for decades is going to be hard and require discussion & consideration for issues that will be affected. States have the tax policy they do because they’ve adapted to the current tax policy. They would have to do that again regardless of the new plan...flat tax, fair tax, etc. would be entirely new for the country.
At least he’s proposing something boldly enough that people are talking about it. The important thing about the discussion is it’s a complete departure from what we have now. Average Americans hate the current system and with good reason but most have resigned themselves to it. Here comes someone with a simple, consistent message.
