Newt Gingrichs campaign for president is more than $1 million in debt, according to the campaigns financial report filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission. The Georgia Republican and former Speaker of the House has raised nearly $2.9 million in his bid for the GOP nomination, while campaign has spent over $2.5 million.
The Georgia Republican and former Speaker of the House said on Saturday that he had approximately $350,000 in cash on hand and had brought in more than $800,000 in the last three months. The average donation to the campaign was $76. According to the filing, Gingrich did not contribute any of his own funds to the campaign over the last quarter.
The campaigns debt is the highest among the candidates for the GOP nod, though former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsmans campaign is $890,000 in debt.
In a recent CNN poll reflecting surveys taken October 3-10, 6% of Republican voters said Gingrich was their choice for the presidential nomination.
Newt is very well qualified. But all signs are he is better on strategic thinking than executive duties who must manage resources efficiently. He would do great as congressional liaison for the president or even as VP on the ticket.
On what is he spending? Certainly not on staff. They went over to Perry, a brilliant move. Maybe he’s back on a diamond kick.
That’ what I mean. I’m haven’t picked a candidate, yet. I know that I don’t trust Mitt Romney, but as for the rest of the slate, I’m waiting to be impressed. They all have some good traits. I just want the primary to run its course without any early, premature decisions.
Globus Warmus.
During Gingrich's first marriage, he cheated on his wife with the woman who became his second wife. Then, he cheated on his second wife with the woman who became his third wife.
His ethics charge was about a college course that Gingrich taught through a tax-exempt foundation. Democrats charged that this was tax evasion, but Gingrich settled the matter before it went to a full House vote. Personally, I believe that this was retaliation for Gingrich being the primary person in the ouster of former Democrat Speaker Jim Wright. Gingrich is the one who filed the charges against Wright, alleging that Wright was using bulk purchases of a book/pamplet to get around House finance limits.
To pay off his ethics settlement, Gingrich accepted a controversial sweetheart loan from Senator Bob Dole, which Gingrich ultimately did not take, probably due to Democrats making a big deal about it.
Gingrich was the Speaker during the period of the Clinton government shutdown, where Bill Clinton appeared to outmaneuver Gingrich in the PR front, ultimately leading the public to blame Gingrich and Repulbicans for the shutdown, and not Clinton. Because of this and the impeachment of Clinton in the House, Republicans lost control of the House, and Gingrich resigned from Congress.
Recently, Gingrich famously endorsed nominal Republican Dede Scozzafava in a special House election in upstate NY-23. Scozzafava was challeneged on the right by Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, who received Tea Party support. Hoffman passed Scozzafava in the polls, leading to her dropping out of the race and endorsing the Democrat over Hoffman. Gingrich later admitted that he didn't really follow the race, leading many to believe that he was a knee-jerk supporter of all things "establishment GOP."
Gingrich also infamously appeared in a public service announcement with Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi, sitting together on a couch to jointly support advancing global warming initiatives.
Finally, as Gingrich launched his 2012 presidential campaign, he began by demeaning the Paul Ryan budget plan as "right-wing social engineering," while Conservatives were trying to put pressure on Democrats to pass a budget in the Senate, and get Obama to come forward with a jobs plan of his own. Gingrich's remarks were seen as not helping Republicans, who were angling for a position of strengh against Democrats.
This is the "baggage" that Gingrich has to overcome.

Which wife? He has more than all the Mormons running have combined.
I'd feel weird pinging my only list, the Whale Wars ping list, to a thread about tax plans. I could start a Courteous and Reasonable Debate ping list but I'm afraid no one would join.
LOL!!!! Okay, I’ll have to give you that one. :^)
Yep. And the lefties don't have a problem with Bill Ayers, either. They also approve of the "Free Mumia" movement.
The difference is, most of us on the Right have standards.
Try harder, you will too!
i sent him a hundred bucks...
That's nice. He'll buy Callista a pretty trinket. She really treasures things like that.
Good job PJ. So many have put aside or forgotten this man’s record. He is no conservative!!
He also cried like a baby because he had to use the rear exit door on Air Force One.
HA! So true!
Newt over Romney any day.
Newt needs a policy wonk role in a Cain Presidency.
He is the champion speaker for the “ethanol lobby” and has given many speaches extolling the virtues and cost effectiveness of this green product. Newt can be bought and paid for very easily. He is just like any other politician.
Absolutely!
These people who are invested 100% into one candidate are the ones making fools of themselves on here.
A lot of them are the screechy "Sarah Squad" who are now bitter and confused. The nasty behavior they picked up over the summer is now being re-directed and the ugliness is being ramped up.
They just don't get it.
Our objectives are to prevent Romney from being our nominee and defeating Obama.
I'll happily vote for any of them in the hunt except Romney, Paul or Huntsman. They ALL have their flaws (as do we all), but any (except the three I named) would be a vast improvement over the Marxist who occupies the White House right now.
And I would have enthusiastically supported Palin as well, but didn't want to be associated with some of her supporters on here.
