There’s a drive thru (only) burger joint here in town that has a ‘tip jar’ on the drive thru shelf with a sign that says “Tipping is not a city in China.”........
Whenever I see something like this, I never leave a tip. In "sit down" restaurants, I will leave a tip as long as the service isn't miserable, and for really outstanding service, I'll leave a 20% tip. If it's really outstanding service from a cute waitress, it could be as high as 25%, but I digress.
Because these people depend on tips as a portion of their wages, restaurants are allowed to pay them an hourly wage of just over $2 an hour. For people working in self service fast food, including drive throughs, that's not the case.
