That's exactly right- she was just a permanent total bedridden invalid after the accident. And I know about Ross Perot's support of her. One thing I never understood about that deal however is why exactly didn't the military take care of her?

No. She wasn't a permanently bedridden invalid. There are photos of him as a “returning hero” and she's standing next to him, on crutches. She had many surgeries, that's true. She lost five inches from her height. And she did relearn how to walk without the aid of crutches, but with a residual limp.
