HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential candidate Mitt Romney took some less staunchly conservative stands than his rivals in their debate Tuesday night, declaring he can work with "good" Democrats and positioning himself closer to the center in line with his claim that he can draw crucial independent voters in next year's general election.
He even defended portions of the Wall Street bailout, a particular sore point with many conservative voters who will play an important role in choosing the Republican nominee next winter and spring.

I thought #8 was one of my posts. Small wonder the admin is letting my posts stay - lol!
Strike two!
I’m a fierce opponent of Romney, but to be fair, you need to look at WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID, instead of the one word “quote” in this excerpt:
ROSE: Well come back to energy, also your economic plan this evening, but I go now to Governor Romney. The paralysis there, and everybodys concerned about it. What specifically would you be prepared to do to make the country moving again on addressing its problems?
ROMNEY: Id be prepared to be a leader. You cant get the country to go in the right direction and get Washington to work if you dont have a president thats a leader. And three years ago, we selected a person who had never had any leadership experience, never worked in the private sector, never had the opportunity to actually bring people together, and he hasnt been able to do so.
He said hed bring us hope and change. Instead, hes divided the nation and tried to blame other people.
The real course for America is to have someone who is a leader, who can identify people in both parties who care more about the country than they care about getting reelected.
There are Democrats like that. There are Republicans like that. I was the governor of a state that had a few Democrats. People in this room know how many we had in Massachusetts.
ROSE: So its essential to deal with Democrats and be prepared to compromise on the big issues of our time?
ROMNEY: You have to stand by your principles. At the same time, you know that ***good Democrats*** and good Republicans who love the country first will be able to find common ground from time to time and recognize we cant keep on spending like were spending, we cant demand more from tax revenue from people, because that kills jobs and hurts working families.
We have got to help the middle class in this country. The only way that will come together is if you have people on both sides of the aisle who listen to a leader who has the experience of leading. And thats what America is looking for and desperately longing for.
Good analysis - Romney seems like to guy to beat now.
we know the only good rat is an unemployed rat. Some of those “good” rats worked to get Obamacare rolling...thanks for the help Mitt.
Exactly right.
Just for the sake of argument, let's say there is such a thing as a good DemocRAT.
What makes you think he or she will want to work with you?
Huntsman is a socialist...
Romney is a crypto-socialist...
They can both go to hell.
Yes, why do the Republicans allow their enemies to moderate their primary debates?
I washed my hands of the party and registered independent and I tell them this whenever they call for money.
They nominated McCain, I voted with my feet.
It will be Mitt. He is the choice of the Establishment Republicans. He is also the choice of the main stream media. this is one reason that obama will be re-elected.
Yesterday Limbaugh speculated that the Republican Establishment got word to Sarah that there was no way she would be allowed to get the Republican nomination.
Not a plus for Romney, not that I care. Cain, then Perry for me.
Romney should have said something more like “I’ll work with Democrats if they come to me, but they’ll have to make the concessions.”
Everybody already knows that Romney is a republiCrat. I doubt this line of attack will stop his evident appeal in the polls.
Time’s ticking away and the media is protecting and promoting him. Also, he is not hurting himself, and his performances in public apparently are going well for him.
Whatever is the key to unseating him, it has not yet been found. The conservatives stay divided and dividing the vote, enabling Romney to appear more formidable than he is. After all, leading with a mere 23-28% is certainly not overwhelming. It is difficult, however, when each contender with Romney for the lead is then destroyed by the media and the other conservatives.
Sure there are good Democrats. Remember Zell Miller and “A National Party No More?” They just don’t have much to do with the Democrat Party any more.
List to follow soon! /s
Amen, amen, amen!
Well, FWIW, the debate was focused strictly on economics.
I do not wish to work with Democrats.
I wish to defeat them.
Thoroughly.
We gotta get out of the primaries with someone who believes that.
“Better than Obama” is such a low bar to jump - I hope we don’t trip and fall over it with a Romney.
There is something to be said about certain times when you need the support of members of the opposing party to get things done, i.e., when we have a GOP President and Dem Congress, as Reagan did.
However, it’s very likely Romney, if POTUS, would have a GOP Congress to work with...”compromise” won’t be needed much.
There is a fine line between strong-arming the opposite party with charm and charisma to get things done ( like Reagan did) vs. just rolling over and playing dead.
Okay.
But can you NAME one?
I don’t care if he can work with the mythical beast of a “good democrat”, I want to know that he can work with conservative, Tea party republicans. And by his statements, I know he won’t.
