The new, ugly debate about Mitt Romney's Mormon faith will only push him closer to the nomination
The Telegraph ^ | October 10th, 2011 | Tim Stanley

"...It probably irks Mitt to have to discuss his faith in this way, but the Mormon debate could be of net benefit to his campaign.

...True, there is a small but significant minority who say they would never vote for a Mormon. According to Gallup, it’s around 22 percent of the population. But opposition to Mormonism doesn’t come from conservative Evangelicals or Catholics. On the contrary, Gallup’s polls show that it’s a liberal thing. Only 7 percent of Baptists and Catholics wouldn’t vote for a Mormon, compared with 32 percent of gays and 49 percent of atheists. Amusingly, the figure is also much, much higher among Mormons, at 22 percent. That’s right, 22 percent of Mormons would never vote for a Mormon. Perhaps they know something we don’t."

I agree with what Bill Bennett said at the Values Forum Summit to Pastor Jeffress.

"You did Rick Perry no good, sir, in what you had to say,"

The world is beginning to see the obvious ignorance and bigotry evidenced by the Baptist pastor’s comments. I suppose there are still some holdouts from the anti Catholic sentiment of the JFK era. Hopefully, the rolls of the anti LDS will dwindle as a result of this very revealing event.

If asked directly about some conflicting or controversial doctrine Romney responds,..... “There are caricatures that pick some obscure aspect of your faith that you never even think about and assume it’s a central element of the Church.... Mormon leaders have said all sorts of things in the past and present but are not Church doctrine.”

This is “smoke and mirrors.” These points we raise are not caricatures, are not obscure, and are Church doctrines.

When the Mormon Church is confronted with the fact that their beliefs are not truly Christian, they find themselves in an extraordinarily awkward position. They cannot defend themselves by expressly explaining their own theology, because it is heretical to Christianity.

It is noteworthy that former Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, and grandson of the former Mormon Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, Steve Benson is featured in a story titled,... “Ex-Mormon Cartoonist Says Romney Not Telling Truth,” following his speech (Editor and Publisher, 12/18/07).

Benson responded with... “Yeah right!”... to Romney’s claim of not allowing the church’s teachings to influence decisions in the White House.

Steve Benson states,..... “the only way Romney could be truly independent of the church as U.S. President would be disavow Mormon doctrine. He hasn’t done that.”

Benson says,.... “The Mormon Church has publicly flipped 180 degrees when it feels it’s necessary for its image, for its financial solvency, and for political expediency.”

.....So of course this would explain why Romney has no difficulty flip-flopping as he’s been well conditioned this is acceptable in his church and it’s history of flip-flopping.

Was never a problem in liberal Massachusetts.

Here is the Mormon Temple in Belmont, Massachusetts, the town in which Romney lived when he was governor ...

From the Temple Facts:

Salt Lake Organizing Committee President Mitt Romney escorted U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy through the Boston Massachusetts Temple during the VIP open house. Just six years earlier, Romney had challenged Kennedy for his veteran seat in the Senate in a heated race many considered too close for comfort.

There are many differences between Mormonism and Christianity.

It is a terrible thing to accuse people who think so of bigotry. Especially a pastor.

What have we become?

Canada Free Press reports connections between Romney’s business alliances and the global elitist organizations including Bilderberg,.. Council on Foreign Relations,.. and the Trilateral Commission.

The Mormon Church has ‘a plan for America’...... Because of this it grooms candidates for high office — like Mitt Romney — from among the Temple Mormons.

These candidates have taken blood oaths of obedience in an LDS Temple ritual....Romney’s church oaths supersede any civil oaths he will take. ......It even trumps the United States Constitution and his pledge to honor and defend it should he be elected President.

First, they learn the secret signs, tokens, and handshakes necessary to pass the sentinels and eventually enter the Celestial glory where, they believe, they will become gods and goddesses, and populate new earths!

Next,.... they swear obedience to certain laws that govern their membership in the church, their behavior, and their obedience to the prophet.

Romney and the other high level Temple Mormons clearly know that..... their “Kingdom of God” is, in reality, a Mormon one-world government run by the church elders under the leadership of their prophet.

Understand that these sworn oaths of obedience to the Mormon Church represent a clear conflict of interest for all Mormons who have also pledged their allegiance to the United States. Romney’s church oaths supersede any civil oaths he will take.

It even trumps the United States Constitution and his pledge to honor and defend it should he be elected President.

While Mitt Romney tries to take a public tact that soft pedals his Mormon beliefs, as a High Priest and Temple Mormon he is bound by his blood oath to put the Mormon Church’s agenda first. His allegiance is to the current Mormon “Prophet” –- not to the American people.

Yeah, you can see the whole tattoo of Mitt Romney following Mormon beliefs throughout his political career, from his stance against abortion to his steadfast refusal to accept gay marriage to...

Oh, right, guess that’s not really an issue for him, now is it. But hey, maybe Senator Kerry can flip on over and fill in for him.

Oh, who cares what the Romney Rinos are all atwitter about. The Left will go after his Mormonism. Rinos are not going to achieve making it an issue of political correctness.

They went after Mittens in Mass. which is why he pushed into radical social terrority to prove he was unholy. Mormonism has plenty of wierd stuff for the leftist media to flap about the Rinos had best get thick skin if they want Mittens to be the GOP nominee.

There needs to be a healthy discussion about the differences in Mormonism and Christianity.

Mitt Romney has a right to believe in the Mormon faith. However, if he wants to be President he should be upfront about what he believes.

Mormans believe that Jesus Christ is not the only begotten Son of God. They believe that we all (including Jesus and Satan) are spirit children that mature like the human body does to become gods themselves. They do not consider Jesus to be their Lord and Savior. To them Jesus is a fully evolved spirit child,

In the after death a Morman man who has been married for eternity in the Morman temple gets his own planet to populate and rule over. (Fife) In addition Morman women are given special names that only their husbands know so the husband can pull them through to the other side after death. (Laake)

Christians believe in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is God's only begotton Son, Who was born of a virgin, Who led a sinless life, Who died for the sins of the world, Who arose from the grave the third day and Who is seated on the right hand of the Father.

I suppose there are still some holdouts from the anti Catholic sentiment of the JFK era.

Sorry, Saundra...Please show us where the Pope has made similar spiritual-political imposing statements such as what you find from Lds leaders below...except for the first three statements, ALL of them were made by Lds leaders between the 1960s and 1980s...

Lds Leader Chronological 'Prophet' or Fundamental # (or Other Title) Overlap Areas: Could the President of the U.S. become a 'puppet' to an Lds 'Prophet?' (The Lds Prophets -- in their own words)
John Taylor Lds 'Prophet' #3 “The Almighty has established this kingdom with order and laws and every thing pertaining thereto…[so] that when the nations shall be convulsed, we may stand forth as saviours…and finally redeem a ruined world, not only in a religious but in a political point of view.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 9, p. 342, April 13, 1862)
Orson Hyde President of the Lds Quorum of the 12 Apostles for 28 years (1847-1875) “What the world calls ‘Mormonism’ will rule every nation...God has decreed it, and his own right arm will accomplish it. This will make the heathen rage.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 53)
Heber J. Grant Lds 'Prophet' #7 "Elder Marion G. Romney recalled the counsel of President Heber J. Grant: 'My boy, you always keep your eye on the President of the Church, and if he ever tells you to do anything, and it is wrong, and you do it, the Lord will bless you for it.' Then with a twinkle in his eye, he said, 'But you don't need to worry. The Lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray'" (in Conference Report, Oct. 1960, p. 78)." Cited in Official Lds publication Search the Commandments: Melchizedek Priesthood Personal Study Guide, p. 209 (1984)
Harold B. Lee Lds 'Prophet' #11 ...President Harold B. Lee said: 'We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through his prophet, '...as if from mine own mouth...(D&C 21:4-5)...You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord himself..." Cited in official Lds publication Remember Me: Relief Society Personal Study Guide I, p. 27 (1989)
Spencer Kimball Lds 'Prophet' #12 "President Spencer W. Kimball said: '...We deal with many things which are thought to be not so spiritual; but all things are spiritual with the Lord, and he expects us to listen, and to obey..." (In Conference Report, Apr. 1977, p. 8; or Ensign, May 1977, p. 7) Cited in official Lds publication Come, Follow Me: Melchizedek Priesthood Personal Study Guide 1983, p.12 (1983)
What about Marion G. Romney, cousin to Mitt's father? Who was he in Lds hierarchy? (Title: 'President' - Top 3 of church as 2nd counselor to both #11 & #12 Lds 'prophets') "Elder Neal A. Maxwell has said: 'Following the living prophets is something that must be done in all seasons and circumstances. We must be like President Marion G. Romney, who humbly said, '..I have never hesitated to follow the counsel of the Authorities of the Church even though it crossed my social, professional, and political life' (Conference Report, April 1941, p. 123). There are, or will be moments when prophetic declarations collide with our pride or our seeming personal interests...Do I believe in the living prophet even when he speaks on matters affecting me and my specialty directly? Or do I stop sustaining the prophet when his words fall in my territory? if the latter, the prophet is without honor in our country! (Things As They Really Are, p. 73). Cited in official Lds publication, Search the Commandments: Melchizedek Priesthood Personal Study Guide, pp. 275-276 (1984)
Ezra Taft Benson Lds 'Prophet' #13 Benson speech given 2/26/80 @BYU. Summary: “…remember, if there is ever a conflict between earthly knowledge and the words of the prophet, you stand with the prophet…” (See excerpts re: 3 of 14 'fundamentals' below) Source: Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet
Benson (cont'd) Fundamental #5 5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time. (My Q: Ya hear that Mitt Romney? Ya hear that Jon Huntsman?)
Benson (cont'd) Fundamental #9 9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual. (My Q: Still listening, Mitt? Still listening, Jon?)
Benson (cont'd) Fundamental #10 10. The prophet may advise on civic matters. (My Q: What say ye Mitt? What say ye Jon?)
Mitt Romney as POTUS??? Aside from above prophetic impositions, why would Mitt not only honor what these 'prophets' have spoken, but what a future Lds 'prophet' may tell him to do? The Law of Consecration Oath Mitt Romney has sworn in the Mormon temple (done before marriage/sealing in temple): "You and each of you covenant and promise before God, angels, and these witnesses at this altar, that you do accept the law of consecration as contained in this, the book of Doctrine and Covenants [he displays the book], in that you do consecrate yourselves, your time, talents, and EVERYTHING with which the Lord has blessed you, or WITH which he MAY bless you, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the building up of the kingdom of God on the earth and for the establishment of Zion." Source: What is an LDS Church/Mormon temple marriage/sealing? [Q: Please define 'Zion': The LDS PR Web site (lds.org) defines its primary meaning: "membership in the [LDS] church."]

Hopefully, the rolls of the anti LDS will dwindle as a result of this very revealing event

Hopefully, the rolls of "truthing" Mormons will increase as a result of the threatening theo-political Mormonism seeks to sweep its way into the White House...including Mormon "scriptures" like these two (Note, ALL: "Zion" to Mormoins = the Mormon church):

“…if Zion do these things she shall prosper, and spread herself and become very glorious, very great, and very terrible. And the nations of the earth shall honor her… (Lds Doctrine & Covenants 97:18-19)

For behold, I say unto you that Zion shall flourish…And the day shall come when the nations of the earth shall tremble because of her, and shall fear because of her terrible ones. (Lds Doctrine & Covenants 64:41, 43)

if he wants to be President he should be upfront about what he believes.

That simply isn't going to happen. Romneys handlers have well known Romneys religion would be a hot button issue and have spent considerable time preparing him with responses...all of which will be evading the doctrines he believes in. We'll hear it's a private matter as for most people....and that everybody has a right to practive their faith as they see fit...etc. et.,c....but it will be evasive and circular as well as inclusive of all peoples faith...but he will never devuldge more than the basic fundamentals most conservatives believe in with or without religion.

Exactly. They believe that Jesus Christ was just one "spirit kid" born among many -- including you & me & per Mormonism, our elder "bro", Lucifer. Did you all know that Mormonism deems Lucifer as your older brother?

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:18)

They do not consider Jesus to be their Lord and Savior.

Well, the problem with Mormonism is not that they avoid giving Jesus the title of "Savior." The problem is that Jesus is just one "Savior" among countless ones!

Admittedly this is currently publicly downplayed -- but to Lds directly -- baptism of/for the dead has been played up by Lds "prophets" from Joseph Smith to Joseph Fielding Smith to others as THE most important individual responsibility there is -- wrapping that responsibility up in their own works-driven salvation:

Lds "prophet" Joseph Fielding Smith: “But greater than all this, so far as our individual responsibilities are concerned, the greatest is to become SAVIORS, in our lesser degree which is assigned us, for the dead who have died without a knowledge of the Gospel. Joseph Smith said, ‘The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us, is to seek after our dead’…It will suffice here to say that the Lord has placed upon us this responsibility of seeing that our dead receive the blessings of the Gospel. Said Joseph Smith: ‘Those saints who neglect it, in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.’” (The Way to Perfection, pp. 153-154)

Lds "prophet" John Taylor: ...we are the only people that know how to SAVE our progenitors, how to SAVE OURSELVES, and how to SAVE our posterity in the celestial kingdom of God;...we in fact are the saviours of the world..." (Journal of Discourses, vol.6, p.163).

Joseph Fielding Smith again: "... mortals have to BE SAVIORS on Mount Zion, acting by proxy for the dead." (The Way to Perfection, p. 325)

Taylor again: "We know something about our progenitors, and God has taught us how to BE SAVIORS FOR THEM by being baptized for them in the flesh,, that they may live according to God in the Spirit." (March 20,1870, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, 3/20/1870)

Another example of Mormon leaders highlighting many 'saviors' -- this one from another angle: The "Jesus" of Brigham Young is one redeemer-savior among who knows how many? "He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. On every earth. How many earths are there?...Consequently every earth has its redeemer..." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, p. 71, 1870) [Tell us, PD, what makes Brigham's "jesus" so universally unique?]

No, "saviors of the world" are NOT plentiful per the Bible (see 1 John 4:14; John 4:42).
