Environmentalist arguments that wolves do not pose a potential threat to humans took another hit when bowhunter Rene Anderson took what she is convinced was a defensive action and fatally shot a wolf that had moved aggressively to within ten feet of her on a remote ridge near Headquarters, Idaho.
Anderson, speaking to this column Friday morning, said the animal loped toward her while she was elk hunting back on Sept. 25. Her story is just now moving into high gear across the Internet, and she is being supported by friends and co-workers in Pierce, a community about 13 miles south of the old Headquarters logging town that now has only a handful of residents.
Support for Anderson is not universal, though. This story has gotten some attention at the Northwest Hikers forum. Contracting views appear on the HuntFishNW forum.
Accounts of the incident have appeared on various forums and in at least one newspaper, but Andersons narrative is somewhat chilling. She had blown an elk call about a half hour earlier, after her husband, Denny, had dropped her off on a ridge for a downhill hunt. For whatever reason, he had insisted that she carry her .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver. Both Andersons told this column that there are a lot of wolves in the Headquarters area. Rene said wherever she finds wolf sign, she no longer finds any elk sign.
Idahos Wolf Conservation and Management Plan states wolves molesting or attacking livestock or domestic animals may be disposed of, and one has the right to protect oneself in self-defense.Clearwater Tribune

While you are correct about tree stands and blinds in Texas, Louisiana, etc,,, out west it’s a different story. Walking and glassing,,then stalking into a shot is how it’s done in the west.
And bow hunting in the west is done with a stalk. My buddy got his 6x6 at 26 yards 2 weeks ago. They are less cautious when they are bugling. Something about being close to getting laid makes them exhibit bad judgement.
muzzleloader and bow seasons are fun out here.
Long ago a USMC ITR instructor was discussing patrolling, he compared it to deer hunting. Then he stopped himself and said,,”well, except in Texas,,,it’s more like an ambush there”.
I think she was telling it the way it was. She was calling up a predator (bear) and got wolf. Not that weird.
For whatever reason, he had insisted that she carry her .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver.
Sounds like you need a few more minutes experience.
I have killed over 400 deer, the vast majority with firearms, but around 25 with a bow. And at least six of those were shot while still-hunting, not from a blind.
While bowhunting elk in CO I got within range of elk three times, but no big bulls, so I didn't take one. Stalking/stillhunting deer, either with gun or bow, is simply not that damned hard, it just takes patience and concentration. I have had a herd of over 20 does come thru the woods and bed down literally on all sides of me, closest about 5 yards - damned cool.
I've met many hunters better in the woods and I, and know several who have taken elk with a bow. Visit a local archery club and you will meet some, they are NOT rare, just work hard at what they do.
To me it seemed as though the individual elk was not as sharp as a whitetail, but hunting individuals in a herd, whatever the animal, increases the odds of getting 'busted'.
Spend many an evening trying to get close to the cow elk, got within twenty yards once, she did not see me she just stayed that distance away. Had intention of killing her, just enjoyed the chase. And I do not need to visit an archery club, have a really nice bow myself, just do not use it anymore. Lost interest in it. I varmint hunt, more fun, less work.
All of the idiots that have introduced predators into the envoirnment/sp should have a small pack first introduced into their back yards...or in the case of big cats, just one in their back yard....
Me too.
that is a huge animal.Hope she stuffs it as a trophy.
Funny! Made me laugh. thanks. =)
I would have used second and third part of the 3S’s. I don’t trust the government.
Unfortunately. They invaded suburban and rural New Jersey and brought anti-gun laws, anti-hunting laws, a plague of disease ridden deer that consume all garden plantings and create traffic accidents and a growing threat from an exploding black bear population.
A plague on them.
No doubt some are, but I was listening to a group of “wolf enthusiasts” at a MacDonalds. Bunch of middle aged women and a couple of men about 6 or seven total, and they were just gushing over how wonderful wolves are. Now this was in Palm Beach county, and I think maybe two of them had actually seen a wolf, But I would rate them as terminally clueless rather than dedicated leftist.
I have a great idea. Let’s get that group of wolf enthusiasts and put them in the midst of a pack of those wolves. I don’t think they’ll be enthusiasts for long!
Works for me, although it’s unlikely to happen. Have you ever noticed how idiots rarely seem to suffer the consequences of their actions?
That’s because they make sure others will suffer instead!
.....or innocense!
