Unfortunately, it looks like the forces of smear, slander, and threat have finally claimed their intended victim. With Palin's announcement that she won't run for president, the election is essentially over.
The calculus is fairly simple: the media and GOP establishment want Romney to be the nominee. Once a progressive is at the head of the Republican ticket, low turnout for Republicans will hand a narrow victory to Obama.
So here is how the election will go. The media hasn't seriously opened up on Herman Cain, but most assuredly they will. Cain has been in business for decades, and the liberal media will troll through every relationship, every business deal, every word he has ever spoken. If that fails, the lies will start. To see evidence of this, we need not look at far as Palin. Rick Perry, another progressive, was attacked for something that someone painted on a rock on land his family leased out. That narrative will be used to attack both Perry and Cain -- Perry for having "allowed" it and Cain for making a big deal over "nothing." Both narratives will be forwarded, potentially in the same program. Once the liberal media goes through Cain's past with a fine-toothed comb, they will doubtless find disgruntled business adversaries, accusations of infidelity, and more.
If Palin had been in the race, the smear tactics would have failed, as the establishment and media threw everything they could possibly throw to get her out of the race. Who knows what her personal reasons, in her heart of hearts, were for not running? Perhaps she feared for the safety of her family. At any rate, there is no other conservative that has as much of a head start on the slander as Palin did....

I like Palin. She might still run a 3rd party campaign if Romney wins the Republican nod. Who knows?
I believe in only one Messiah, and no political figure is Him....not Palin, Cain, Perry...anybody. They are fallible humans, some with better skills than others.

I think that the GOP race just settled into a race of the zombies, with the possible exception of Cain.
Palin did leave because of family dissension on running. This I found out several days ago. She was going to run. The hill had gotten steeper because of Romney’s manipulation of the primary process and his alliance with Ailes at FOX, but that wasn’t going to stop her. But her consideration for her family, and family concerns for her personal safety, trumped all.
Palin will go out into the country in downticket contests. I expect you will see deep and abiding dissatisfaction with the present field. Palin will look very good in comparison. She’ll run for office again at some point, probably in Arizona, but for now, she’ll campaign for conservatives.

If you ever do manage to recover from this stigma, then there are several good choices of candidates available to chose from. You might consider giving it a try. And the World will go on with or without you after all.
Yes, she would have done that. On both sides. Palin has a very high "hate" factor from the left. They would have been really fired up to defeat her. They may not be thrilled with obama, but they hate Palin much more than they love obama right now.
Plus, Palin will be heard from many times before Nov '12 gets here - I think she will be willing to do some of the heavy-liftng and dirty work so the necessary word about the criminals currently in power gets out and to let the MSM split it's attention (between trashing her and trashing the GOP candidate(s)). I'm just getting energized and I expect to be fully powered come January/February.

I am not a McCain fan but I stand by what I said. It was the financial crash which did in McCain and the media used it to great success to further hammer the Rep.
Obama won the first time because he was a blank people projected their fantasies on. One need only look at the steady decline of his popularity—the more people learned of the actual person, the less they liked him.
The economy has gotten steadily worse since he took office.
The writer actually believes that knowing these simple things, that come election day the folks who aren’t of the hard right or hard left will think, “You know, Obama is divisive when I thought he’d be a uniter, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s gotten us into MORE war, not less, he hasn’t repaired any of the ‘damage’ done by Bush, we’ve piled up more debt without any improvement in the economy, everything is worse...but that Mitt Romney could make things WORSE, so I’m voting for Obama again”?
The Palin worship is no different from the Obama worship in terms of thinking The One can “save” us. I like and respect Palin but, no thanks, she’s not the superhero who’s going to single-handedly turn things around.
We get so caught up in the game aspect of politics that we take it way too personally, and like sports fanatics invest our egos in one person who is ‘our’ player.
Nope. There are no indispensible Ones. We need to take the best choice we’ve got and use that person to push Obama from a second term, and continue the pressure on whoever it is after election day. Similarly, we have to tell Boehner and the rest of the DC Republicans that they are expected to do the right thing and we will hound them until they do.
The solution isn’t a magic bullet and/or Savior. The solution is MORE work, not less—which, frankly, is what all this daydreaming about a One who’s going to solve everything is, a lazy person’s idea of how a Republic is repaired.
If Sarah had entered the primary, she would not win. She knew this and did not enter because she did not want to damage her brand. Her devotees will continue to buy her videos and worship at the alter of Sarah and she can continue to rake in the bucks.
Palin has a devoted following but they would not be enough to win the primary and even if they did, she would never win the general election. Sarah Palin at the top of the ticket would have guaranteed an Obama victory.
You are spot on. Sarah’s decision upset a lot of folks here and they need to get over it. While deserving of respect she is not the super hero where she goes into a phone booth and comes out and soars up into the sky and easily solves every problem in the world as people around here seem to expect. She is a down to earth woman who has her own priorities and demons as do we all. She would do well to get on the Cain Train but we should respect her decision not to run and leave the woman alone.

Utter nonsense. The republicans remember what happened the last time they weren't inspired by the establishment's selection of McCain - we got Obama. They won't make that mistake again. This entir election will be about Obama, not necessarily about the republican candidate.

Rick Perry has launched a Rick Perry campaign. Sure, organized, stealth. Everyone knows he can’t debate but he’ll have genuine powerhouse conservatives behind him....not Republican in name only, conservatives. He’s a good person, as is his wife, and the garbage thrown at him will not stick. The massive evangelical voting block will stay home if Romney is the candidate. They honestly believe the Mormon cult stuff. I love the things Cain says. I like Romney too. But, it’s Perry for me 100%. He’s my governor and I trust him.
BS; the anger is at an all time high. ABBO is a mantra...you figure it out. Anyone being a post-Palin fatalist should wake up and stop crying and take the country back with the rest of us.

She still has young children at home who need her, especially Trig. (That is the baby’s name, isn’t it?)
Women can have it all in our country — just can’t have it all at once.
I think she made the right decision for her family.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned this: If her husband opposed her running, his opinion would trump all others. (Maybe I’m projecting, here, but he might be part of the family opposition.)
