96-year-old Chattanooga resident denied voting ID

Dorothy Cooper is 96 but she can remember only one election when she's been eligible to vote but hasn't.

The retired domestic worker was born in a small North Georgia town before women had the right to vote. She began casting ballots in her 20s after moving to Chattanooga for work. She missed voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 because a move to Nashville prevented her from registering in time.

So when she learned last month at a community meeting that under a new state law she'd need a photo ID to vote next year, she talked with a volunteer about how to get to a state Driver Service Center to get her free ID. But when she got there Monday with an envelope full of documents, a clerk denied her request.

That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.

"But I didn't have my marriage certificate," Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.

As you see in the article, she can still vote absentee without the new ID, so she loses nothing. The dems are such liars. I really hate them.

Yup. Just another ginned-up “controversy” to confuse the issue.

How hard did they work to dig up this story? I’m sure there will be a spate of 96 year old southern belles who are ineligible to vote in the upcoming election.

Power mad clerk.

Recently heard of a Freeper in Fla denied renewal of her drivers liscense.

Clerk was demanding originals of just about everything except her dental records.

For every one of these stories they could publish a thousand stories about an illegal who is using fake documents, but they would never dare to take on the open-borders cabal of fat-cat cheap-illegal-labor Republicans and anti-American future-socialist-voter Democrats

Just to renew her license? Maybe they have new rules, but all I ever needed was my old license. Of course that was quite a few years ago.

She’s black. If she was a white Republican, it wouldn’t be a story.

What the h%ll? Without the marriage license nothing would lined up on this woman’s records. Apparently she is too stupid to vote anyway. ;-)

She can still vote absentee. No harm - no foul. It’s the left (originally saw the article on Think Progress) trying to create a controversy where none exists.

Not to mention she can get a copy of her marriage license, too.

If you don’t have your old license, I believe you are required to produce 3 items of proof...3 of these:

birth certificate
school records/transcripts
military discharge papers
selective service card
social security card
marriage certificate
military photo ID

and a few others that I don’t remember

You should read the comments on Think Progress regarding the story. Honestly, if I had to deal with liberals all day, I would literally pull my hair out! They are just plain dumb.

She’ll be able to vote again after she dies. Of course, she’ll have the same ballot that all the dead people have, the one that only has democRAT names on it.

I went to a very liberal university. I had to put up with that every day.

Now I live in TX. :) Heaven on earth.

I have trouble every time I go the local state run MVD despite having all necessary documents. Even in my small town MVD, there has always been an illegal attempting to get a drivers license (we’re one of two states that issue drivers licenses to illegals). The MVD workers are very accommodating and advise the illegal, in Spanish, about the necessary documents. They inform them of the hours for when the mexican consulate gives out matricula consular papers as well. With a white American, however, the workers are much less pleasant and always attempt to have me return with other unnecessary documents.

I also have a vehicle registered in Albuquerque so when I need to renew there I use the MVD Express which are a chain of privately run MVD’s. The difference between the state run and privately run MVD’s is amazing. I never have any problems and illegals do not use it as there is a service fee.

As to this story, there’s nothing keeping this lady from ordering a copy of her marriage certificate or presenting one of the other documents in the list. I do not have a problem with making people prove who they are in order to vote and also to prove that they are eligible to vote in US elections. This is another MSM sob story about the heartless Republicans repressing the black vote.

Typical DMV shitbag. When I went to the DMV here in Louisiana, it took me 4 trips to get a driver's license. The clerk required my ORIGINAL birth certificate, not a copy. On my final trip to the DMV, the clerk glanced at my original birth cert., then processed my driver's license.

FYI: I'm an active duty Army officer, showed her my Army ID card, and was in uniform.

In MA it is much more difficult to get a Duplicate License than the original. And it’s not accepted as a form of ID.

She could have gotten an ID with her maiden name if she wanted as well.
