The Hank Williams Jr. song that has opened Monday Night Football for 20 years was not part of the opening of this week's Indianapolis-Tampa Bay game after Williams made controversial comments about President Barack Obama.
Williams compared Obama to Adolf Hitler on Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends" show Monday morning.
ESPN, in a statement, said: "While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast."

In other news, the rumor is Madonna will be sanctioned to be the halftime performer at the Super Bowl. She called Palin a “bitch” and during a concert tour had a video which quickly juxtaposed pictures of Bush, Hitler, and Mugabe. The inference was clear Bush=Hitler.
Yeah NFL, really that’s what I look forward to seeing on Super Bowl Sunday- Madonna singing “I touch myself” or “like a virgin” before a nationwide audience.
I’m done with ESPN.
Yes, private company.
Maybe they should just show the freaking game sans all the song-and-dance routines, animated robots, inane sideline reporterettes, and gauzy sob stories about the 350lb nosetackle's sick kitten. NFL football can surely hold its own as entertainment without all the BS. Between that list of crap and the number of ED commercials, it's getting hard to watch.
Hank Williams Jr. pointed out that Obama and Biden are as poles apart from the mentioned Republicans as Adolf Hitler would have been from the Prime Minister of Israel.
It is bias that the media is accusing Williams of comparing Obama to Hitler.
The media is out creating news, again.
Oh, wait!
Oil is Black, Obamah is 1/2 Black. ...racist comment.
Sorry, moving along.
Eff ESPN and all who bow to politically correct nonsense. I would confidently wager that pulling Williams cost many more viewers than leaving him on would have. His comments were actually pretty innocuous, but I wonder whom he had in mind as the third stooge: Holder, Napolitano, Geitner, Sibelius, or Hillary? So many to choose from!
He most certainly did not! Read the transcript or watch the clip, ESPN.
Shut up and singisnt that the mantra?

It’s sure mine. The only problem I have with this is ESPN’s hypocrisy. A few weeks ago some ESPN anchor had Mike Tyson on his program. Tyson was allowed to make the most revolting sexual comments about Sara Palin and the anchors openly giggled at his comments (Google Mike Tyson/Sara Palin). Afterwards, nothing was stated from ESPN’s higher ups that I’m aware of. So it seems that if you are a conservative you’d better censor your speech. And if you are liberal spewing vile remarks about a conservative woman, you’re just fine.
Angry-Jawa, you my friend just hit it out of the park. The NFL show is getting unwatchable. I tape them and watch 20 min of football without any of their crap. FF through So that is at least 2 hours of crap we have to deal with. Will not me. ESPN and the NFL are fast becoming useless.
George Lopez was on FNC this morning, said something controversial about Herman Cain. I didn’t see what followed, so I’m wondering if the hosts gave Lopez the same treatment Williams got....
This will be Rush’s lead today, and his monologue will be priceless. Listen and enjoy the double standards that he most surely will intone, as he skewers ESPN for their blatant, and POLITICAL hypocrisy.
Political Correctness is the politically correct term for “Cultural Marxism”.
That’s fine. You don’t have to patronize ESPN. I don’t.
Ain’t it the truth! I remember when football was just that, football.
Sounds like a move concocted by the intelligence of the officiating corps... That fluffy bunch on MNF are about as puss-filled as Zero, anyway. NFL football sucks!
And what is infuriating is that there are a small percentage of so-called conservatives (a few on FR as well) who will gladly agree with this decision by the liberal scum at ESPN.
“Did anyone see what they replaced Hank with?”
Heck no! Just didn’t want to be part of any PC cr@p. Went to bed early for a change. n/s
Bunch of thin skinned femme ninnies at ESPN. Jr.rattled some off the cuff remarks inferring a comparison type. Perhaps it was over the edge but he didn’t write song lyrics over it. Some freedom of speech. I am currently and will still not be a subscriber to watch ESPN.
On what grounds?
