After Sundays Washington Post reported that Texas Governor Rick Perry had utilized a Texas hunting camp named Niggerhead, GOP candidate Herman Cain (a former pizza exec. and the only black candidate running for the GOP presidential nomination) wasted little time in accusing Perry of being insensitive to racial issues.
Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, Cain told ABCs This Week, think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place.
When anchor Christiane Amanpour pushed back noting that the rock had actually been painted over Cain doubled-down, saying: But how long ago was it painted over? So Im still saying that it is a sign of insensitivity.
(Cain made similar comments on Fox News Sunday demonstrating that this was not a gaffe made in response to a question that simply caught him off guard.)
In a prepared release, Perry Campaign Communications Director Ray Sullivan responded to Cains attack, saying: Mr. Cain is wrong about the Perry familys quick action to eliminate the word on the rock, but is right the word written by others long ago is insensitive and offensive. That is why the Perrys took quick action to cover and obscure it.
Sullivan reiterated that the rock had been painted and turned over, and that The Perrys did not own, name or control the property, they simply rented hunting rights to 1,000 acres of the ranch.
My take? Cains comments were at best premature and at worst, highly irresponsible. It was a cheap shot, and, perhaps is a signal that Cain is willing to play the race card against a fellow Republican when it benefits him.
The fact that Cain spoke out so soon basing his comments on a newly-posted and thinly-sourced article published by an outlet many conservatives believe to have a liberal bias speaks to Cains lack of political judgment.
This isnt the first time Cains penchant for talking has gotten him in trouble, but in this instance, Cain has aided and abetted those who wish to portray southern conservatives as racists. In so doing, Cain provides cover for anyone wishing to cast Perry as such.
Just last week, Sarah Palin noted that Herb Cain was the flavor of the week. By siding with the Washington Post and Al Sharpton against a fellow Republican who appears to have done nothing wrong Cain might just have proven Palin right.
Thanks Quicksilver, CW got me straightened out on that too!
I knew that didn’t sound like something she would say, and I was really confused there. Thanks.
Cain should’ve been more suspicious of the press and not taken the bait so readily. It’s a mistake because he failed to consider how the press would spin his answer. Or, perhaps he saw an opening to exploit. That seems less likely given his political inexperience and general style.
Did you forget the sarcasm tag? You cannot possibly be serious.
Judge a man by WHAT HE DOES vs. WHAT HE SAYS....
PERRY GIVES TAX PAYERS MONEY FOR COLLEGE TUITION TO ILLEGALS AND THINKS THAT’S OKAY....
THAT alone besides calling all conservatives “heartless” is when I said bye bye to Perry.....
Like I said if you want out of control illegal immigration that is destroying our nation, then vote for Perry.
Cain doesnt even know the basic facts, yet he pops off.*****
Christiane Amanpour of all people even tried to give Cain an out telling him that the rock had been painted over by Perry’s dad years ago. Cain not satisfied then started in with the yeah but how long was it left uncovered routine.
Cain saw an opening for the race card and he wasn’t going to be talked out of it.
Pathetic.
I think Perry or his family have enough clout to ask the landlord to remove the sign as part of the lease.
Sounds like it was a long term arrangement and it could have easily been removed years ago.
And it was. In 1983!
Your response was weak and out of proportion to what the original statement was about. I don’t think anyone mentioned “crutch”, affirmative action” or any of the other adjectives you used in your impassioned response. In my opinion you are a Perry supporter who is seeking to deflect attention away from Rick Perry sinking like a rock in the polls. Hope your man does better in the next debate.
I am no fan of Rick Perry and have so expressed myself, but he is the victim here...of the race card dealt from the bottom of the deck by Herman Cain.
Cain is exposing himself as a phony and a fraud. He is so thoroughly unqualified to be President that his entire candidacy is a joke. Up to now I had his my fire about his many ridiculous statements on the Second Amendment, Palestinian statehood and other equally inane comments. I used to think he was a nice guy, just ill informed on many things. Now he is playing the race card. He is not a nice guy and he IS in the wrong party. Plus he is totally unqualified to be President. BYE Hermie.
Lash.
Lash.
Lash.
Geeeez
Any Republican who has been working for years to elect Republicans would be insulted because the movie insinuated that all Republicans, except Miss Perfect, of course, are corrupt and unethical. They weren't content to stop at Alaskan Republicans as being corrupt, they used the last 5-10 minutes to attack the whole Republican party. I was offended.
This is how the game went down:
1. Plant false story and present it as absolute fact.
2. Ask Cain for a comment on the suposedly factual story.
3. Use his legitimate answer to divide Republicans.
4. Let it then be known that Cain attacks Perry over a false issue.
5. The reporters then go to the bar and celebrate sticking it to the Republicans.
“My job is not to investigate the facts myself”.
Are you running for president? Have you declared?
If you ARE a candidate, you DO have an obligation to get the facts before commenting. This is especially true when as a Republican you are discussing anything published in the WaPo.
Sorry, but Cain should have said he didn’t have the facts, so couldn’t comment. Instead, to make what he thought would be a few points, he added to the WaPo smear of Perry and made himself look an a$$.
Cain hired a new spokesperson who I hope gets on the job pronto. But this gaffe can’t be pinned on a spokesperson. Cain is now in the top tier, which means he has to be that much more careful in what he says.
Lol....nice duck there Mr. Huffpo...
Firstly, there's not a single plan anywhere that will get 100% support of the people.
Secondly, the Texas Legislature overwhelmingly passed this bill. It wasn't even close. Hell, it was almost unanimous. If the people feel that the legislators voted against their wishes, they can vote the people out. More importantly, the Texas Constitution is fairly easy to change. I would suggest that the people of my state get this issue on the ballot if they feel that the majority of people here don't support the Texas Legislature.
Thirdly, this isn't some give-away. If one is getting instate tuition, they have been paying into the system, and are residents of the State of Texas. That doesn't change if you are legal or illegal. These people have to secure funding to pay the tuition. People who don't live in Texas, therefore paying taxes in Texas, don't get in-state tution.
That being said, how did your Texas Senator and Representative vote regarding Texas' requirements for in-state tuition rates for Texan residents and Texas taxpayers in Texas schools?
As I said I hope Mr Perry is able to right his sinking ship in time to give a better performance in the next debate,
” I read that he did not even bother to prepare for the debate, probably as a result of overconfidence in his lead in the polls.”
Rick spent the day managing the firefighting of the massive wildfires in Texas. Currently burned? About 6,000 square miles.
He was busy while everyone else was sipping Diet Coke, reviewing notes for the debate.
The more I see this incessant piling on of Perry, and none of it has much substance, the more likely I am to support him.
There's some reason everyone is out to get him.
When you give someone playing a race card a pass (excuse it) you are handing them a character crutch. What, you think he’s allowed to reach for that crutch? What did I say other than the truth?
