Support for presidential hopeful Rick Perry is weakening with the Texas governor now in third place, a poll of conservative voters in Iowa indicates.
The poll, released Thursday by the American Research Group, had Perry in third with 14 percent of the vote, behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 21 percent and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., at 15 percent, UPI.com reported.
"When Perry came in, a lot of people were leaning [toward] Perry or at least looking at him very hard," Bob Vander Plaats, the head of Family Leader, socially conservative umbrella organization, told The Hill, a Washington publication.
"The first three issues he addressed were HPV, the DREAM Act and the border fence," said former Iowa Republican Party Political Director Craig Robinson. "That shows how damaging these debates have been to Perry. He's explaining and he hasn't done a very good job of it."

Coonasshead.
You’re wrong. Perry has terrific speaking skills. His expertise is in a town hall atmosphere, or where he’s the featured guest. Granted, he hasn’t done very well in the debates. The next one might change peoples’ minds. He’s a fantastic orator, dependent on the setting.
After stumbling performances in the first two debates and his appalling "heartless" answer in the third, my wife and I simultaneously turned to each other and said, "He's toast!".
Well then gather the family lap dog and cuddle in your luxury townhouse and tremble over a cup of Starbucks frozen coffee. Because Mitt Romney is your guy.
Tough Texans that like to hunt and support the 2nd amendment and drink beer and watch the NFL support Rick Perry and always did.
Your post is absurd.
I cannot see Romney taking Iowa. The pro-life issue is far too important to Iowa Republicans.
I cannot see Romney taking Iowa.
You are probably correct. In 2008 Romney lost to Huckabee with 34%, Romney with 25%, Thompson and McCain each with 13%, Paul with 10% and Giuliani with 4%.
Bachman maybe a conservative, but she is a neophyte!
She has said and done all he wrong things, and I can not support her at this time for President, unless she is the last person standing against Obama.
McCain - green, Romney - yellow, Huckabee - blue
Things may be a little different this year because of the economy but if anyone think Iowa Republicans are liberal, they're not paying attention.
Romney had better hope Christy does not get in.
He did great for the third one, he told everyone where he stands on the invaders; he is in favor of enticing even more over the border.
THAT may have something to do with his fall.
There's no bottom for him.
We need to pick people who have a record of actual corruption fighting and organization overhauling regardless of party.
The ones that fit that are Cain and Palin. Anyone else would be a 5 foot leap out of a 10 foot hole.
Perry is mulch now. N- head, illegals, crony capitalism, vaccination... I don’t have to list them all if you have been paying attention. He can’t win.
Yeah and if those racists weren't booing him off the stage ...I'm not voting for him...period.
I voted for Rick Perry in the last two elections. He has done a pretty good job as governor. I know that he can give a good speech and he is usually a very astute candidate. However, he has performed terribly in the debates and seeing as he has been in politics for so long, there really isn’t any excuse for his lack of preparation. If he gets the nomination, I will vote for him. But, we need a candidate who can communicate his ideas clearly. If you doubt that, you ever wonder why Reagan was so successful — surely being know as the “Great Communicator” didn’t hurt. Oh and just because someone is a good speaker, it doesn’t ensure that he or she will make a good president. The person also must have good morals and sound political positions — two qualities that “Slick Willie” often lacked.
Americans came away with the uncomfortable feeling that a candidate was berating them, demeaning them for disagreeing about in-state tuition to illegals.
Perry turned out to be a bomb-thrower. His comments "talked down" to observers.
Perry probably could gave survived damaging issues had he been aware that he was on the national stage now---that he was not speaking to Texans anymore.
This can be the downside with some Governors running. They know what works in their own state, but are clueless to how the country is as a whole.
Perry family's longtime hunting camp is situated on a vast, 42,000-acre ranch that reaches into three counties. It was common in those pre-Great Society days to name property after its shape---hence the offensive name.
Politicians have a nasty habit of covering-up a shady past by acting like "humanitarians." Makes me wonder what the "magnanimous" LBJ was hiding down there in Texas.
Perry resorted to sucking up to illegals.
“Not speaking to Texans anymore.”
That’s the problem - perhaps all Texans are conservatives (I don’t know) but not all conservatives are Texans. And there has to be a way for Perry to talk to the rest of the base in a clear, concise way that we can understand and admire. So far, he only seems to be talking to his Texas base.
Perry apparently has Texans convinced that they can do whatever they want whenever they want because they are Texas and only federal laws that benefit them are the ones they want. . He hogties Texans by appealing to their Big D chauvinism---and reinforces the ego appeal by saying "we can secede whenever we want to." (That frees Perry to conduct all the funny business he wants).
Perrynistas talk out of both sides of their mouth.....controlling immigration is not Texas' responsibility but in-state tuition is a state's rights issue. The more Perry talks about immigration, the deeper he keeps digging his own hole.
