TALLAHASSEE — State leaders on Friday set Florida's 2012 presidential primary for Jan. 31, bucking national party rules and ensuring that several other states will leapfrog Florida and set earlier elections.
The move was intended to ensure that America's biggest battleground state has a major voice in picking the Republican nomination, much as it did in 2008 when Florida's late January primary effectively clinched the nomination for John McCain.
"It is more important for states such as Florida not to be on the back end, but to be on the front end of these primaries," said former state Sen. Al Lawson of Tallahassee, a member of the primary committee who initially called for Florida to set its primary for Jan. 3.

Well, they’ll still take a back seat...I’ve been told laws are on the books in IA and NH to have their primary before other states...so those 2 will move ahead of Florida.
Absolutely...But the upside is that it gives a great deal more time for the 3rd Party candidate to get out the message...Gives us months instead of weeks to campain for the 3rd Party Candidate...

The fact that Cain endorsed Romney in 2008 doesn’t bother me so much considering the alternative, what bothers me is Cain saying the other day he wouldn’t vote for Perry even if he were the nominee, but he could vote for Romney.
THAT, is a deal killer with me.
In what alternative universe is Romney somehow a better choice than Perry? and worse yet how could he vote for Obama over Perry? That one statement makes Cain pretty much a nonstarter for me. We don’t need another Colin Powel who turns on us at the last moment and supports Obama, we’ve already been down that road.
True, this disadvantages underfunded candidates, but it also disadvantages RINOs who tend to do well in the Northeast and Iowa.
And the large Spanish-speaking population, plus some Caribbean imports.
There are some elements of “the South” in the Panhandle, and Jacksonville is a relatively conservative area, but once you hit Orlando you’re in a whole ‘nother world.
Like your ideas. The only thing I would add is that those states with open primaries go to the back of the line regardless of how they voted for POTUS.
If the Dems are making strategic voting decisions then why aren't they all voting for the most conservative candidate? If they want to have (in their eyes) the least electable Republican going up against their candidate then why vote en masse for a moderate?
I live in California. There is no chance at all of the Republican candidate winning here. Even if Obama is shown on TV engaging in satanic orgies involving human sacrifices he will still get the majority of votes here.
That is why I strongly suggest that in the November election that ALL California Republicans vote for the Green Party candidate. If All Republicans that live in hopeless states like CA, MA, WA, RI, etc. vote for the Green Party then they will get over 5% of the vote and become a recognized party. They can start to be a pain in the Dems side.
That is what is meant by strategic voting.
If there are Dems in NH registering to vote as Republicans, and then going ahead and voting for the RINO, it is because they probably really like that particular candidate and want to see him win. It's very difficult to get a significant number of people to vote strategically. There is still a bit of religious awe associated with the voting process. People aren't quite cynical enough to use their vote as a tool.
You might be able to get some libertarians to move there if you talk up the hot lesbians in Oregon...

Might as well hold all the primary’s at the same time. Florida already gets perhaps one of the most significant says of any state. Its the small States like Idaho & Alaska that get ignored.
Indeed When Sarah Palin ran for vice president in 2008 that was probably the most attention Alaska ever got in a presidential election.
I ain’t questioning Florida’s right to decide how to cast her own electors. Florida has compete authority in this area. But but i also respect the right of the republican party being a private organization to set rules for its nominating convention.
Even as I reject the fairness of them rules which favor some States over others. Iowa may by law require that they go first but that doesn’t mean any other state can’t try to push them so early as to preclude them form relevancy.
To be honest there is something to be said for going later in the game. For example originally States clamored to cast their electors last in order to decide the victor.

Don’t forget the economic impact. No point in sending media to cover a state whose primary is late in the cycle. Lots of coverage, polls, research, advertisements, and such on the early states
Of course, the Democrats not counting FL and MI last election allowed Obama to beat Hillary.
