Daniels asks conservatives to cut Perry some slack
Times Union ^ | Sept. 25, 2011 | AP

Posted on 09/25/2011 9:02:09 AM PDT by Clairity

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is asking fellow Republicans not to count out Rick Perry.

Daniels says it's too early for what he calls "last rites" over the Perry campaign, and he notes that Perry hasn't been in the race for very long.

Daniels says people ought to cut Perry some slack and give him a little time.

Daniels also says he's worried that the party's nominee will end up playing it safe in light of President Barack Obama's political weakness, and merely campaign as a default option to Obama's re-election.

Not BS at all. I was pretty ok with Perry until that comment. After that, he is off my list. Don’t insult those you want to vote for you.

Illegal immigration is a hot button with me in the first place (ex-Southern Californian) but Perry’s comments were beyond the pale. Instant loss of my vote and I’m not the only one on here.

LOL. You Perry and Romney supporters are all the same, you can’t see beyond your window.

It doesn’t need to be either of those or we get Obama. I have principles and I stand on them. Apparently you don’t.

I’ve been played by the GOP for far too long and its over. I will not hold my nose and vote again for a RINO.

This election is the GOPs to lose and lose it they will if they keep throwing establishment candidates at us instead of a real conservative. If Obama gets elected again it will be the establishment’s fault, not mine.

And Perry can’t even win a straw poll, even when they pay them off.

Iowa was a bus in, Mich is a pay off - Florida actually had delegates. Big difference.

Perry is a loser and his ‘debate’ performance proved it.

Hmm ... according to the very link you provided, Romney polls far better than Perry. So why, if that is your rationale for supporting a candidate, are you not pushing for Romney?

The variance between Perry and Cain is within the MOE.

It really is bad when the Perry hardcores are relying on links that sandbag their own guy in the process.

I’m not closed to other candidates, what I am closed to attacking the front runner to benefit another candidate who doesn’t seem able to win on their own merits.

Herman Caine has not gone on the attack, nor have most of his supporters (I said most, not all).

Didn’t Reagan have a rule about attacking other Republicans during a primary?

Yeah and the shilling increase (pro Perry threads) this weekend are making me think they are getting desperate to save his campaign.

Neither Perry or Romney are the frontrunners. And I will not vote for either of them under for any reason.

I like Cain and you are right he hasn’t attacked.

BTW, Reagan’s rule applied to CANDIDATES, not voters. Part of what we do here is hash out the fights that the candidates don’t touch.

But I will not vote for just any candidate the GOP throws up at me. They need to learn their lesson, that we aren’t gonna take it anymore!

Yup. I was thinking I could hold my nose for Mr. “Smarmy” Perry, but those comments were the last straw.

Here is my perspective: If not a conservative like Cain or Bachmann Or Palin then we’ll get a GOP candidate who will either not be able to win because of baggage or if they win will do something to anger the tea party and conservatives. So if Perry it is more and more likely he will be as bad a Romney. So it’s Obama or Obama lite anyways. To be truthful.

If a candidate with a good overall record is unacceptable because of one foolish statement, we're doomed. Let's concede to Obama now.

From his interview on Hannity's radio show, Perry was trying to suggest, since the feds aren't doing their job on the border, these kid's common life of welfare and criminal activity was heartless. Texas wanted to incentivize legalization through in-state education rather than bare the greater social cost of inaction.

Those elements were in his debate answer but the way he said it was offensive and stupid.

I don't know how he recovers from that kind of verbal gaffe. He's not a naturally artful communicator, that is certain.

His campaign has not handled the error well and hasn't prepared him well either. However strong his total record is, his heart and head may not be in this race.

I was there at Presidency 5 FL Straw Poll. Perry is toast. The volunteers could not give away the Perry signs, or stickers as nobody wanted them. During the debate, the snipes at Romney elicited many groans & grumbling & hisses from fellow audience members.

Very few republican candidates are tough on illegal immigration. I can’t think of a single one that I KNOW will enforce the laws. I think they might...and they say they will...but I’m not sure what they’ll really do.

Hell, I’d vote for Romney in a second if I truly thought he’d do what he says!? But it’s more a leap of faith.

No it isn’t. Neither Perry nor Romney are electable. Perry insulted his base (very stupid) and Romney is the choice of the MSM because of his liberalism and the fact they will be all over his affiliation with a known racist group.

You signed up on 9/21/11. I wanted to point that out to others and to make a point that you haven’t been around long enough to make statements like that. Or are you a retread?

More often than not, n00bs who are as vocal as you are are trolls. It is a service to other long time freepers to point them out so the admins can keep an eye out.

It’s not only the ‘foolish statement’, it is his record regarding illegals, and other stupid things he did as Govenor (TTC, Gardrasil, etc). It is also the fact he cannot debate.
