This is a guy who won three terms as Governor of Texas, served two and most of the third, who won two terms before that as state ag commissioner, plus his races for the state lege, and to look at how he’s doing, none of it did a bit of good preparing him to run for president. And no, it’s not like Mitt Romney’s looking all that impressive either. Why should I give up supporting Palin for either of these guys? Because they’re tall, dark and handsome? It’s not because they’re better on the merits.

Perry may be a great governor for Texas.
He may even be getting the short end of the stick on fairness in conservative forums.
But the fact is he simply isn’t cutting the mustard on the national level.

We need a leader, and more importantly a leader who can compete with Obama on his own turf.

That’s why Cain won in Florida.

First, Perry sucks at debating,

I'll agree with that although I'll be interested in how he does in a one to one match vs. a 7 to 1 match.

and he has that little amnesty problem.

He says he's against amnesty

Are you equating amnesty with signing an overwhelmingly bi-partisan law that directs the Texas higher education authorities to refrain from investigating immigration status and to grant in-state tuition to all Texas high school graduates with three years of residency?

Other than the "first seal the border" pat response -- that Perry also offers -- how does the candidate of your choice propose to deal with the illegal immigrantation problem?

Well we ought to be used to being insulted by R politicians by now, President Bush called us racists and vigilantes, McCain called us racist and said we were too lazy to do the work illegals do.

I for one am fed up with being insulted by someone that expects me to vote for them. I know anyone that is as conservative on the border issues as I am cannot get elected, I know there will be a certain amount of holding my nose while voting and expect to have to vote against Obama instead of FOR anyone. I just think being insulted on top of it may be too much to expect.

***Obama is beating Cain by 10 points and in the real elections Obama would destroy Cain.***

Cain is *just* breaking out. He is just now getting the name recognition. I’ll bet the polls tighten up fast as word gets out about what he actually stands for.

The same source your referenced has Obama beating Perry by 8.2 points. (That’s only 1.8 points difference, BTW)

Obama would *slaughter* Perry in a debate.

***************

One more thing, that same source has RON PAUL *beating* Obama by 3.3 points, so it’s not exactly something that most of us would take very seriously.

Excuse me...the border issues are real issues, vital to those of us that live on the border and far more important to others than they realize. We are rapidly importing the Cartel War here, and yes people from terrorist countries are walking right in- just in case nothing else about the border issues interest you.

Those of us interested in border issues are smart enough to know any candidate that truly wants to crack down and do what needs to be done will not get elected. I for one know I will have to find a compromise candidate to support as usual. However, not sure I want to have to compromise my concerns and be insulted at the same time. How in the world anyone can think they can throw insults at people and then expect their vote is beyond me. Perry should have done more to explain his position on border issues and stuck to that...insulting us was not the thing to do.

I bit my tongue and held my nose and voted for McCain like a good little girl even though he was terrible on the border issues and insulted those of us that are here and have to live with decisions made by ignorant politicians. That did us a lot of good.

It is still early in the process, if our opinions aren’t wanted now then don’t expect our votes later. Seriously.

If not Perry, it’s Romney and if it’s Romney, it’s Obama.

- - - - -
Wrong. It doesn’t have to be either Perry OR Romney and neither one would win against Zero.

Time to tell the GOP - ONLY CONSERVATIVES, NO MORE RINOS!!

I will not vote for either Romney or Perry. And I won’t stay home either.

And regarding the Florida straw poll — it is straw poll, not a primary.

- - - - -
It’s a straw poll with actual GOP delegates, not bussed in or bought off supporters. That makes a huge difference, it is much closer to a primary than the other straw polls.

Good, hand the election to Obama, if that’s what you want. Find your new Perot.

Its early yet, and Cain won that straw poll a few days after a good debate session and an audience-grabbing story about his surviving cancer. Good for him, I just don't put much into it in the bigger picture. Bachmann was poised to with the Iowa straw poll. Where is she now, 1%?

Gee, according to your own link Perry isn’t that far ahead of Cain (1.8), and Zero is ahead of all of them atm.

I will be money, however that the polls taken after yesterday will show a surge for Cain.

So your shilling for Perry is getting you nowhere. Move along and lets start talking about the CONSERVATIVES running.

With all due respect, Gov. Daniels, if ANYTHING was obvious from the last three debates it was that Perry has mediocre smarts and minimal mental staying power. Those are deeper problems that are not going to improve significantly for Perry through mere debate practice and rote memorization drills. He seemingly has a 10 watt bulb between his ears. In any presidential debate, the message itself is a secondary consideration for many voters. Their primary consideration is the candidate’s physical and mental fitness for the job. Perry has consistently come across as physically worn and mentally vacant, especially after the mid-point in each debate. If he does that in any debate against Obama, we will almost certainly be sunk for another four years. Because I am convinced he cannot significantly sharpen his intellect in the time remaining before we choose a candidate, I think we are screwed if he wins the nomination.
