I am not a fan of it.
I understand some of the reasoning for it, and my understanding is that only about 1% of enrollments fall into this category, but I'm not a fan of it.
Do you seriously think that illegals (aka MEXICANS) plan 3-5 years out so that their kids can qualify for in state tuition? If not, then it isn't the magnet that some want to claim it is.
It is late, however, I don’t think I ever explicitly said it was a magnet. But now that you bring it up, all the benefits that are bestowed on ILLEGAL aliens really are a magnet—the benefits that accrue starting at at birth~and now thru college...
Our country is over $14 TRILLION IN FUNDED DEBT (not to mention the unfunded liabilities).
We simply cannot afford funding ILLEGAL non-citizens. We cannot afford it as National Policy~which would likely be the case with Perry as Pres. as he passionately embraced the policy calling those who did not agree as heartless. Tho I am sure if I read stories of individual students, I would understand their plight, we cannot afford it as national policy. It is not a right!
It may be only 1% of enrollments, but as the number of students who have been here illegally increases, that percentage will likely rise.
Regardless of the percentage, I still think it is unfair to those who are legal citizens...especially to those who are playing by the rules...all the LEGAL IMMIGRANTS that came here, paid their dues, etc....
From what I have read today on FR, the Supremes mandated that ILLEGALS would have to be provided K-12 education. That does not mean it is their right to seek a college degree...
I may be in minority on this, but that is my opinion having put 3 thru college for 5+ degrees.
