(CNN) - Egypt has forbidden the picking and exporting of palm fronds used in the upcoming Jewish holiday of Sukkot, leaving Israel scrambling to make up for the shortage.
The fronds of the date palm, called lulavs, are waved during Sukkot, which celebrates the ancient wanderings of the Jewish people after their exile from Egypt. The seven-day holiday begins on the evening of October 12.
"The Agriculture Ministry is working for the complete supply of lulavs for anyone who wants one after it became apparent that picking and exporting them from Sinai is completely forbidden this year," the ministry said.
"As a result of the new circumstances, the Minister of Agriculture, Orit Noked, encourages Israeli palm tree growers to significantly increase the number of lulavs to be given for the Sukkot holiday. At the same time, we will advance alternatives to importing palm trees so that everyone can observe the obligations of Sukkot."

Sounds like an excellent opportunity for some poor Asian nation. If I was a Jewish businessman in the Philippines, I would be seeing dancing dollar signs right now.
There’s an exploitation-movie parody in this. “I’m Gonna Git You, Sukkah.”
I hope Israel is self-sustaining. If not, life there will soon become unbearable. The world in general will not help them, including the US. They are slowing becoming isolated politically, which will leave them on their own (well not completely ... there is G-d, after all, and HE has promises to keep).
You can leave by the stairs, or...
How much for one rib?
This one’s for typing...
No, CRAMPS!
My bitch better have my money...
One of the top five funny movies of all time.
Depending on a country that is at cold war (if not hot) with Israel to furnish the ritual lulavs is stupidest of all. Egypt is currently in a somewhat understandable snit that some of its police were slain by Israeli commandos on a revenge mission against other Egyptians who shot some rockets into Israel a while ago. Anyhow, I’m glad they can get some from the more neutral Spain. By the way, is there anything in the ritual that says an entire neighborhood of Jews can’t share one lulav?
Now just months later, then Egypt of Camp David is gone for good, and every day looks more like Iran. THANK YOU OBAMA. But also thank the idiot media Dhimmis from Anderson Cooper to Step Smith. Never, EVER trust a one of them.
The crowning irony is that the devout Islamic clerics who have arisen tend to denounce democracy. They see only a theocracy as compatible with the tenets of Islam. Only a strongman with liberal religious philosophies can keep such a country as relatively free as it was. Now Egypt is probably going to get a strongman with radical religious philosophies, and democracy will get ruthlessly mowed down.
From my understanding, even a peace can be shared. Those in the Warsaw Ghetto shared a small peace in their worship services.
Palm fronds? I wonder how South Sudan is stocked.
I’m going to corner the lulov market!
“...is there anything in the ritual that says an entire neighborhood of Jews cant share one lulav?”
No. That’s what people did in the old days, and still do in some remote corners.
They might as well try to do that this year, if the shortage is severe. No need to give Egypt the business, let alone beg them for it, and hopefully other sources will fill in some of the slack.
I think we ought to buy from South Sudan even if the price is higher, and India, too. If it grows palms and isn’t Islamic, it’s on the short list as far as I’m concerned. Florida, too, of course.
They can get some plastic ones from China. After the celebrations, they can store them and use them year after year.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.....just like Christians using fake Christmas trees today....and they are from China too.
Fake! Today’s reality. Just like our President.
They don’t HAVE to use palm fronds. Jews in the U.S. use branches and autumn leaves. Grape vines would work. They need to adapt.
More signs of the “triumph” of the Obamabastards foreign policy muddling in the Middle East.
Jimmy Carter lost Iran and Obama, so far has lost Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Libya. Wonder where he will be meddling NEXT?
