Stand With Arizona
The National Council of La Raza recently called for their boycott of Arizona over S.B. 1070 to end. There was a ton of media hype about this boycott last year, and the threat sparked some big "BUYcott" efforts by Stand With Arizona and others (here, here, here and many more) to urge like-minded Americans to support the state's economy against what was expected to be a major coordinated attack.
Indeed, La Raza, the AFL-CIO, SEIU and others spent a ton of time and money to push their boycott. We pushed our efforts too. So how did it all work out? Well, SWA's AZBuycott page and site has received over 8 million visits since it launched on May 15, 2010. We urged people to buy Arizona products and most importantly, to come to Arizona with their families, associations and businesses. We don't know how much it helped, but we do know we got million of hits and tens of thousands of supportive emails.
So how much did La Raza's high profile boycott hurt the state?

La Raza's first high-profile objective: to cancel the MLB All-Star Game, was an epic failure. La Raza spent a lot of money and press trying to browbeat Bud Selig to yank the game from Phoenix. They even got 110,000 petition signatures signed, and dramatically tried to deliver them to Bud Selig and MLB owners. Result? Nada. The All-Star Game was held at Chase Field in Phoenix and was sold out.

If they boycott Arizona I’ll be that much more likely to pay the good Arizonans a visit. So much the likelier if they just quit Arizona!
If the Texas legislature passed an Arizona style immigration law, would Perry veto it or allow it to become law without his signature? If it became law, would Perry support a boycott of TX?
I seriously doubt the boycott or the buycott had any effect on Arizona’s economy at all. Unless they are very local, like a neighborhood boycott of 1 specific business, or very specific, like the students at the School for the Deaf who boycotted to get rid of a new President who didn’t know sign language, boycotts rarely work. That’s not saying you can’t apply pressure. The bad publicity for Target over removing the Salvation Army bellringers caused a change but they were never in any financial trouble over it. A state is too diverse for any boycott to work. As this article shows the best it can do is nothing at all and the worst is to make the boycotters look silly.
It sounds like this boycott was nearly as successful as this past weekend’s “Days of Rage” on Wall Street.
The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is in a contentious fight with the state of Arizona over its controversial Mexican-American Studies program. A state law went into effect in Arizona on January 1, 2011, banning the teaching of ethnic studies in K-12 schools. It was prompted by an investigation into TUSD’s ethnic studies curriculum by Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne when he was State Superintendent of Schools.
The program is known as “raza studies,” which means race studies, championed by organizations like the far left organization National Council of La Raza. The course does not simply teach Latino youth about their heritage, it goes well beyond that. The textbooks teach Latino youth that they are mistreated by America, training them to become radical anti-American activists. Textbooks include “The Pedagogy of the Oppressed” and “Occupied America.” Another text "gloats over the difficulties our country is having at enforcing its immigration laws." Benjamin Franklin is vilified as a racist. White people are referred to as “gringos” and “oppressors” of Latino people. “Privilege” is described as related to a person’s ethnicity.
At a TUSD school board meeting on May 10, one upset mother read excerpts from the textbook “An Epic Poem,” including, My land is lost and stolen, My culture has been raped….we have to destroy capitalism…overthrow a government that has committed abuses….to the bloodsuckers, the parasites, the vampires who are the capitalists of the world: The schools are tools of the power structure that blind and sentence our youth to a life of confusion, and hypocrisy, one that preaches assimilation and practices institutional racism." --SNIP--
A Judicial Watch investigation reveals that federal funding for a Mexican La Raza group that for years has raked in millions of taxpayer dollars has skyrocketed since one of its top officials got a job in the Obama White House. The influential and politically-connected National Council of La Raza (NCLR) has long benefitted from Uncle Sam’s largess but the group has made a killing since Obama hired its senior vice president (Cecilia Muñoz) in 2009 to be his director of intergovernmental affairs.
Ignored by the mainstream media, Judicial Watch covered the appointment because the president issued a special “ethics waiver” to bring Muñoz aboard since it violated his own lobbyist ban. At the pro illegal immigration NCLR, Muñoz supervised all legislative and advocacy activities on the state and local levels and she was heavily involved in the congressional immigration battles that took place in the George W. Bush Administration.
She also brought in a steady flow of government cash that’s allowed the Washington D.C.-based group to expand nationwide and promote its leftist, open-borders agenda via a network of community organizations dedicated to serving Latinos.Among them are a variety of local groups that provide social services, housing counseling and farm worker assistance as well as publicly-funded charter schools that promote radical Chicano curriculums. Judicial Watch published a special report on this a few years ago.
This week a JW probe has uncovered details of the alarming increase in federal funding that these NCLR groups have received since Muñoz joined the Obama Administration.
In fact, the government cash more than doubled the year Muñoz joined the White House, from $4.1 million to $11 million. Not surprisingly, a big chunk of the money (60%) came from the Department of Labor, which is headed by a former California congresswoman (Hilda Solis) with close ties to the La Raza movement. Since Obama named her Labor Secretary, Solis has launched a nationwide campaign to protect illegal immigrant workers in the U.S.
Just this week Solis penned declarations with Guatemala and Nicaragua to preserve the rights of their migrants. The NCLR also received additional taxpayer dollars from other federal agencies in 2010, the JW probe found. The Department of Housing and Urban Development doled out $2.5 million for housing counseling, the Department of Education contributed nearly $800,000 and the Centers for Disease Control a quarter of a million. Additionally, NCLR affiliates nationwide raked in tens of millions of government grant and recovery dollars last year thanks to the Muñoz factor. An offshoot called Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) saw its federal funding nearly double to $18.3 million following Muñoz’ appointment.
A social service and legal assistance organization (Ayuda Inc.) that didn’t receive any federal funding between 2005 and 2008 got $600,000 in 2009 and $548,000 in 2010 from the Department of Justice. The group provides immigration law services and guarantees confidentiality to assure illegal aliens that they won’t be reported to authorities.

It’d be a very good start. And better yet if Mexico would also boycott Arizona, as well as the rest of the US.
The American Southwest is still being conquered by Mexicans. California, for example, is completely gone.

Here's a laugh for you...La Raza ginned up the "boycott" the only way liberals know how. They petitioned governments to cease doing business with AZ. Wonderful idea, sounds good so far.
Until you ask yourself, "Self, what business do governments do with merchants in Arizona?" That's a good question. Let's see.
The governments buy Red-Light Cameras from a company in Scottsdale, AZ by the pallet. That's the largest municipal government purchase I can think of, off the top of my head. (Maybe manhole covers, but they're made in Tempe, AZ.) No way these people are going to boycott the Red-Light Cameras and Photo-Radar units.
I'm sorry, that banner makes me laugh... quite a bit!
