President Barack Obama says the U.S. Postal Service should be allowed to reduce mail delivery to five days a week to help cut its massive losses.

Exactly. When five-day delivery fails we’ll get four-day delivery right on down to no delivery. Makes perfect sense. Pay union miscreants big bucks and benefits to do nothing. Isn’t that the Marxist goal?
nobama, as usual has this backwards. 5/6ths of the employees should be fired and delivery should be limited to one day per week. Really...
Hey barry,
How about shutting down GOVERNMENT at least one day extra per week WITHOUT pay?
Think of all the money that would be saved! All that ‘wealth’ to spread around!
I guess they will lay off about 20% of the workers. Yeah, and I bet it will snow in Panama next month too. So, let’s see, no mail delivery and a bunch of people lingering around the post office doing what?? Meanwhile, the vehicle fleet will remain as is. There should be some savings in less fuel used I guess. But in the long run, this is not going to solve the PO’s problems. The legacy costs are too large from what I gather. The flat fee for delivery US wide of course is a problem but that is not addressed.
Perhaps (.)bama will use this plan to save money with the military too that is be on duty 5 days a week or some such.
They could get rid of the pension portion of the retirement plan. The TSP is like a 401k, and I think that is the bulk of the retirement plan anyway, although I could be misinformed about that part. I do know that the 20 years/3 highest pay years pension stuff is what makes people who HATE working for USPS stay. To collect the max they can get. It’s stupid.
If they get rid of the pension, I think that alone would improve personnel quality and save gobs of money.
You are uninformed.
“..One less day of junk mail.”
I used to work for the Postal Service. They felt that ‘bulk mail’ (we were NOT to use the words “junk mail”) was the future of the business! This was back in the 90’s.
I’d hired in thinking I’d retire from the job, but when they started pushing this idea, -investing in our delivering stuff that people REALLY don’t want in the first place, I knew that the place probably wouldn’t survive the 30 years I’d need til retirement.
I would be happy with ONE day a week mail service
You're joking, right?
This is a decision to be made by the Postmaster General, not the President. But the Postmaster General should be allowed to make this decision, and right now, he can’t. Saturday delivery probably doesn’t make sense anymore.
From Mark Steyn’s latest book-We’ve learned never again to elect a president who has run nothing but his mouth.
F U Obama.
Not many. The Post Office has signed union labor contracts that do not permit them to lay off people.
They would have to get congressional authority to break their union contracts and lay off excess manpower.
Thanks to Promises to Unions, Post Office Unable to Adapt to Changing Business EnvironmentAs any computer user knows, the Internet revolution has led to people and businesses sending far less conventional mail.
At the same time, decades of contractual promises made to unionized workers, including no-layoff clauses, are increasing the post offices costs. Labor represents 80 percent of the agencys expenses, compared with 53 percent at United Parcel Service and 32 percent at FedEx, its two biggest private competitors. Postal workers also receive more generous health benefits than most other federal employees
Just kill it!
People have said I live in a fantasy world before.
“What says that the mail cant be held at the Post Office for pick up of delivered to the recipient twice a week?”
Hmm, interesting question.... I’m guessing we’d actually need more post offices in rural areas, but how about once a week, then, or perhaps NO delivery?
Would all of Hussein’s “deserving” people approve?
We ALL know that the USPS can be saved, modernized to fit the times, and still provide the quality service it is charged with, if there is the political will to do so.
THERE ISN’T, and the Unions will scream bloody murder, so we will just watch it spiral in to death...
The larger government gets the less it can actually do properly yet the liberal ansewr to failure after failure is that we just haven’t made government big enough!
Amazing. Just amazing.
Of course Obama is downgrading postal service. It’s one of the few constitutionally legitimate functions of the federal government.
Hey, libs, if Obama can’t manage to deliver the mail, how do you think he’ll do with heart transplants and brain surgery?
