The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947. It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, as well as the world’s most technologically sophisticated air force.
The predecessor organizations in the Army of today’s Air Force are:
Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps August 1, 1907–July 18, 1914
Aviation Section, Signal Corps July 18, 1914–May 20, 1918
Division of Military Aeronautics (May 20, 1918 to May 24, 1918)
U.S. Army Air Service (May 24, 1918 to July 2, 1926)
U.S. Army Air Corps (July 2, 1926 to June 20, 1941)
U.S. Army Air Forces (June 20, 1941 to September 18, 1947)
