A P-51 crashed into a vip area at the reno air races about 25. Initial reports indicate many deaths.
Thank you!
Elevators are the movable tail surfaces that control pitch. They are attached to the horizontal stabilizer.

3 people dead in Reno air race crash
CBS/AP) RENO, Nev. - Officials say the pilot of a World War II era fighter plane that crashed into the grandstands at an air race event in Reno, Nev., was killed in the wreck, along with two other people.
Reno Air Races President and CEO Mike Houghton said at a news conference that pilot Jimmy Leeward of Ocala, Fla., died in the crash Friday after apparently losing control of the aircraft.
Leeward owned the Leeward Air Ranch Racing Team and was a well-known racing pilot. His website says he had flown more than 120 races and served as a stunt pilot for numerous movies, including “Amelia” and “Cloud Dancer.”

Mechanical failure, obviously.
Many moons ago my husband and I were in Vegas and were watching air races when one of the planes suddenly fell and created a cloud of dirt. His family - looked like wife and mother - went running towards the field. Horrible.
Too dangerous and no room for error at that altitude. But in this case sounds like altitude wouldn’t have helped.

Dear Pissed Off:
Three nights ago the overlords pulled the timely news of Dish’s HD satellite going dark. It is just getting back up as we speak now.
Millions affected but not Breaking news to ‘their’ standard.
I hope JimRob kicks some butt.
Insurance companies will not let anyone fly commercial airlines cargo that is over 80. Even younger for passenger planes
That may be true.
But, age wasn’t any factor in this. One of his elevators broke off.
That is horrific. There’s just nothing left of the P-51, it went in straight down and disintegrated right in front of those first two rows. If that plane had come down fifty yards to one side, I think we’d be talking about even more than 12 or 13 dead.
BTW, folks, when he says graphic, he’s not kidding. You don’t see the crash, but you see the immediate aftermath at close range.

Ping to you dear one. Hope you are at your job and not at Reno.
Prayers up.
If you are squeamish, do NOT go past about 45:00 in the video that Royal Wulff linked. There are close-up shots of some horribly injured people.

George from New England, I'm just of the many all volunteer group of what you described as wacko moderators.
We are here to help Jim Robinson and Free Republic.
We work very hard, often long hours, and at the expense of our personal family time just because we support the Conservative principles Jim Robinson set up in creating and maintaining Free Republic.
We try our best expecting nothing in return. Yet we get negative comments like yours all day long.
When you have your own personal Conservative website up and successfully running for the 14 years Jim has been running Free Republic, please let us know.
Thanks.
Mostly you folks do great, but, Breaking News has been a disaster for some time. Just look at it at any given time.
When Barry Goldwater reached 60, his insurance company told him he now needed an experienced co-pilot with him. He hired Ruth Reinhold, who had originally taught him to fly, and was 7 years older than he was.
God Bless All Of The Admin Mods!
Many are called but only a few get to wear the badges. 8-]
14 years ? Wow.
I try to avoid Breaking News as much as possible these days.
It can get kind of hectic and chaotic with all the different strokes of posters around.
You’re not always so lucky to have the wiggle room when it’s coming in ‘ hot’n’heavy ‘ (that’s military for “We’re gettin’ bombed here, General!” and I don’t mean at the Saigon Hilton piano bar.) :-)
Keep up the mighty fine work!

I assumed it was removed from breaking because it was a vanity. But I did check google news and there were no stories up yet. Since my cousin called me from the grand stand just after it happened I figured I’d break the story first and get links later. I harbor no ill will to the mods.
As for the cause of the crash, it’s to early to be certain. However, it is pointing toward a structural failure in the control system... Time will tell.
Would you please tell us what the criteria used for pulling this story from breaking news is?
Not trying to be a jerk, just genuinely wondering.
I think if we knew why a story like this got pulled from breaking news perhaps we could keep it from happening in the future.
Did the original poster break a rule, not format something correctly, not follow some proper protocol? What?
It sure seemed like breaking news to me but I don’t get to make the decision.
What am I missing?
Thanks in advance.
