Perry on TARP support: No 'Ma'am'
Politico ^ | 09/16/11 | Ben Smith

After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.

"No Ma'am," he told her.

"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.

"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.

This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.

The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.

"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."

Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....”

We certainly weren’t going to pass a republican-only plan through that body, so we needed a bipartisan cooperation, if anything at all was going to be done.

Well, y'all got just exactly what you wanted then, didn't ya.

If the facts “slime” Perry, he has no one but himself to blame.

Yep. Herman Cain is a rock solid conservative. Except when he endorsed and supported Mittens Romney in 2008 during the primaries, right? Or does he get a pass on that as a "rock solid conservative"? I like Cain, btw, but what makes him a "rock solid conservative"?

Where the heck am I in this so-called sliming of Perry on abortion?

I can’t find one post of mine!

I’ll apologize to you as well, because I believe you read my post the same way Onyx appeared to read it, and as a result were offended.

I did not mean to imply, nor do I believe, that freepers supporting Sarah Palin have a plan to soft-peddle Romney attacks in order to tear down Perry.

I stand by my comment about the three groups in the country who are most going after Perry, but my comments about Romney’s treatment were a separate argument that I clearly did an inadequate job of separating from the first observation.

Since I knew they were separate, I assumed previously that I was being attacked simply for pointing out that Sarah Palin supporters were attacking Perry to pull him down and make room for Sarah Palin. I didn’t think that was a surprising revelation, so it confused me that people would be upset that I would say that.

But on reflection, it seems clear that following that with the comments about Romney made it appear I was saying THAT was the method SP supporters were using.

So again, I apologize. I wouldn’t like being accused of that either.

What facts are those? Palin also believes abortion is a state’ rights issue. Does that make abortion a liability for her as well?

BTW, I’m jealous of you, because I was at the RPV fundraiser in Richmond on Wednesday, and Perry was there, but neither I nor my daughter could get near him. Mostly because they had to hold a press gaggle where all the press people could ask about was Gardasil.

I've been very impressed with him in the debates.
He also has a great sense of humor. Did you see where he reported himself to AttackWatch?

LOL. No, I missed that! He's very personable and sharp. I enjoyed meeting him!

It’s very simple: Stephen A. Douglas, and many of the Democrats he represented, were personally opposed to slavery. But they said it was up to the states to decide.

In the same way, in this modern day, Gerald Ford, Ron Paul, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, and Rick Perry say that they are personally opposed to abortion, but that it is up to the states to decide.

What’s so hard to understand about the immorality and unconstitutionality of that?

It’s also a violation of the Reagan plank that has been in the GOP platform for the last 27 years, which recognizes the personhood of the child in the womb and their protection by the explicit, imperative words of the Fourteenth Amendment.

“No State shall deprive any person of life without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

I don’t think they are all PerryHaters. I think they just don’t like what they see, or don’t want to like what they see.

And it isn’t all Sarah Palin supporters. I’m still a Sarah Palin supporter, and I’m not yet supporting Perry, but I don’t say bad things about him that don’t appear to be based in fact.

But you could look at the debate thread to see me say bad things about him that I believe were based in fact.

I think you can support a candidate, and criticize other candidates, without having to lie about them or make wild accusations and repeat them dozens of times when they’ve been discussed to death.

FGS. Senator DeMint endorsed Romney also. And BTW, I didn't know about Herman Cain's endorsement, not that it would matter.

Governor Perry endorsed Rudy Guiliani in '08!

Does THAT matter?

Tell me YES, if you think the other endorsements matter so damn much.

Sheeeeeesh!

No. I think it is about exactly what I said it was about, how you can twist words and misrepresent letters and claim something that isn’t true. I simply used an article accusing Palin the exact same way to illustrate my point.

Maybe you were lucky.... after all, Governor Perry kissed me on my right cheek!

You likely wouldn’t have wanted that!

J/K. He wouldn’t have kissed you.

He also spoke to me for quite a long while and he took the picture of us with my throw away camera.

(I’m not telling what we talked about).

NICE GUY!

This entire thread is disingenuous. Nowhere in it did Rick Perry write a letter urging the passing of TARP.
