Perry on TARP support: No 'Ma'am'
Politico ^ | 09/16/11 | Ben Smith

After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.

"No Ma'am," he told her.

"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.

"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.

This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.

The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.

"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."

Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....”

Right. The letter does not mention TARP. It mentions taking actions for economic recovery. It is also a letter from the Repubican Governor’s Association and the Democratic GOvernor’s Association. It is those two organizations that were supporting legislation for economic recovery. Perry was Chair, so he signed it for the RGA.

Sarah Palin was a member of the RGA, as were other conservative governors. Many conservatives were calling for action at that time. Most didn’t support what we ended up with, but again, we are attacking someone for urging responsible action, simply because the democrats didn’t TAKE responsible action.

Heck, I supported TARP, even though it later turned out worse than expected. Still, TARP was not the big bailout program that caused our difficulties. It has actually done well, and cost us a lot less in the end than most people expected, because we’ve been paid back.

But Obama has re-spent some of the paid-back money. And Bush is the one who pushed the Car company bailout that was never intended to be covered by TARP.

But this letter isn’t indicating support for TARP, and it especially isn’t indicating INDIVIDUAL support from Rick Perry, who in this instance was acting in his position as the chair of the RGA.

I can find no indication of any governors at the time who didn’t support the RGA position.

Hate? Not me...

Trust? Now that is a completely different matter.

I'll take a VP candidate supporting the top of the ticket over 20 years of wheeling and dealing, any day.

THere seem to be three groups attacking Perry right now.

First are the liberals, who kind of liked the idea of Romney because they figured he’d depress the conservative base, and be easy to defend on Obamacare.

Second are the Romney folks, who saw their front-runner status smashed, and are now trying to throw everything at Perry, at times calling him liberal (like here), at other times too conservative, and always saying he’s not electable.

Third are some of the Palin folks, who saw the easy entry into the contest by Sarah Palin blocked by Perry’s quick rise to the front of the pack. Romney was no obstacle for her, being well to her left, but Perry occupied her space and needed to be pushed aside.

One thing I’ve noticed lately is a lot more posts that sound supportive of Romney, and a lack of the usual pile-on of angry respondents. There are still people saying “hell no”, but it seems much more subdued.

It reminds me of how people either stopped attacking McCain right after the IOWA caucuse, or worse started supporting him here on FR, in order to stop Romney. At least in that case the goal was a worthy one, if you believed Romney was lying.

What I fear is that by soft-peddling opposition to Romney in order to tear down Perry, we’ll end up the same way we did in 2008, only with Romney as our nominee instead of McCain.

So, is your problem that you (mistakenly) think the letter supported TARP, or is it that he says he didn’t support TARP?

In other threads you’ve attacked him for this letter. But you’ve never attacked Sarah Palin for being a vocal supporter of TARP, so I’m thinking maybe you liked TARP, and just don’t like Perry saying he didn’t support it.

Maybe you’ll clear that up sometime.

You’re full of it, Charles. Name some Romney supporters here. I’ll wait.

As for your accusations against Palin supporters, you’d better back off.

Free Republic isn’t about to change to suit you.

ALL candidates are vetted, and that process includes both positive and negative articles.

The truth is most often found somewhere in between or a little in both or each.

Do you really expect Perry supporters to post negative articles about him?

Do you really expect Palin supporters to NOT post any Perry articles at all?

You have a real penchant for stirring the pot.

A whole lot of FReepers don’t know much about Governor Perry and they and we are entitled to read all the various articles available here on FR. We’re all very smart people and can readily tell the difference between false information, lies, smears and inuendo.

I was fortunate to meet, get pictures with and speak personally to 5 of our candidates on Monday night after their debate in Tampa, Florida.

Those five included, Governor’s Perry and Romney; Speaker Newt, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann.

ALL 5 were extremely nice and very friendly to me and Governor Perry even kissed me on my right cheek and held my throw away camera in his hand to take the picture of us together.

You need to stop trying to stir the pot.

Another fake "smoking gun" like the supposed hillarycare support some eight months before she had a plan.

This stuff is silly.

Interesting comments from the other signatory, Joe Manchin.

That's exact how I took the letter.

My pleasure, and thanks very much, dear Trish.

If Sarah Palin doesn’t run (but she’s running) then one of the current candidates is going to be our nominee, so the very last thing we need is a pot stirrer like Charles with his wild accusations about us.

YES! Awesome!

I got to speak with each one at least 30 seconds and that’s quite a long time in a receiving line!

It is also a letter from the Repubican Governor’s Association and the Democratic Governor’s Association.

Maybe, but there's another problem...look who they're sending it to.

got a question about the Hillary letter...

She and Billy Jeff's love of socialized medicine was widely known at the time Gov Perry wrote the letter. HITH could he have possibly thought anything good was going to come out of her efforts?

I told him he has my prayers and that I liked his 9-9-9 and he thanked me and then I asked him if he would please let me bring 4 older ladies to the front to take a picture with him because they absolutely love him -— and he said -— you mean you don’t? (hahahahaha) -— and he graciously stood for a picture with them and talked with them for a while.

They were THRILLED!

HE IS VERY GRACIOUS AND EVER SO NICE.

He’s just like us.

Well, we all know that watchdog groups claiming things are always correct.

And that "allegedly" means "for sure".

And it ceased to exist September 1, 2010, because the commission was a limited-time authorization with a sunset clause. It was not disbanded early as you implied. :

The Texas Residential Construction Commission will be closed September 1, 2010 (pursuant to provisions under Sec. 325.017 of the Government Code). All records and property will be transferred to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Any requests for information under the Texas Open Records Act should be sent to: open.records@cpa.state.tx.us. (See more details on the Public Information Act.)

Further, The RGA raised over $217 million dollars during the period Rick Perry chaired it. And during that period, he got a TOTAL of $4 million from it, which is LESS than 1/50th of the total spent on governors for all 50 states; so the idea that it was some slush fund for Perry is absurd on it's face.

So, really, your post is a mix of innuendo, hypothesis, incorrect facts, speculation, and unsupported charges.

However, would it surprise anybody to find out that a Texas Residential Construction Commission would tend to be dominated by people who are in the construction business, and would tend to make government regulation easier on builders?

So long as you give government the power to do things, the people who have the most to lose will spend the most money to protect themselves. The solution is to limit government.
