Perry on TARP support: No 'Ma'am'
Politico ^ | 09/16/11 | Ben Smith

Posted on 09/16/2011 12:46:22 PM PDT by winoneforthegipper

After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.

"No Ma'am," he told her.

"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.

"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.

This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.

The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.

"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."

Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....”

Thanks, VR. You have kept a cool head despite much provocation.

He’s just like us.

I've always thought so, too. I used to listen to his radio program out of Atlanta and it was obvious to me that he's smart and a good and decent man.

We'd be in good hands if he were POTUS.

If you hadn’t read that yet, you haven’t been paying attention. That is standard anti-perry thread spam.

In the historic context of that letter, it is as obvious as the nose on your face that it was in support of TARP.

Are you all going to trash your own credibility for the obviously completely unscrupulous Mr. Perry?

... while we ignore other candidates who actually said they supported TARP.

But Charles, you said last week that you were a Palin supporter? Which is it? Are you or aren't you?

The original poster, who is a Palin supporter and states so in their signature, accused Rick Perry of supporting TARP by some sort of flimsy deductive reasoning.

When confronted by concrete evidence that Sarah Palin, who he supports, literally supported TARP after it was signed, he makes excuses for her while not excusing Perry’s non-support of TARP.

That’s why Sarah Palin was mentioned in this thread.

Are we really going to start supporting anti-free-speech campaign finance laws now? I hope not. That was John McCain’s thing. I hope it isn’t any candidate’s thing this time around.

I do fear that the “crony capitalism” meme will turn into a campaign finance reform thing.

Okay let's spell it out...

I knew of his (perry) early this morning that he denied TARP.

So all day long, before I got a hold of a site that either posted the video or linked to it, I posted the letter being tied into the Recovery Act. I let a fellow FREEPER no that the video was coming.

After all I knew Perry said it was not TARP.....lol

So you decide which program he graciously asked the speaker of the house to enact....if it's TARP well then he's just a liar if it's the Porkulus well then he's just not a conservative.

Choice is yours.

Another reason why conservatives should not endorse a candidate too early. The early primaries are no place for knee-jerk reactions.

You're the one making assumptions. Nowhere is any specific plan, including TARP, mentioned in that letter. You're the one destroying your own credibility by falsely attacking a solid pro-life candidate like Rick Perry, therefore elevating a pro-choice slimeball like Mitt Romney. Great job!!

I’ve changed my mind about Cain. I think that he would make a great VP for Sarah, but if that is not in the offing, if he is our nominee I would gladly vote for him for president.

You had him right when you listened to him on the radio! He hasn’t changed. I stand by my impression: he is one of us. Just as gracious and down to earth as he could possibly be.

Rick Perry is not solidly pro-life. He supports exceptions for rape, incest and "maternal health".

You don’t like Perry, and will make up any smear, and post any liberal information from the media (like your graph from the Dallas Morning News) to smear and slime him on a so-called conservative website.

The truth stings, doesn't it, bub?

I would gladly vote for Herman Cain also.

His 9-9-9- plan is a good done too.

Paraphrasing, He says, "if God gets 10%, then 9% is good enough for the government".

What truth is that? It’s hard to tell with all of the discredited “facts” on FR these days by you and 6 or so other rabid anti-Perry posters.
