Suppose for the moment that the 2012 election is just a few months away, and President Obama still has a fighting chance at reelection.
Unemployment is creeping downward, though still not far from 9 percent. The economy is still growing, barely. And Mr. Obama has managed to nudge his job approval ratings up near 47 percent.
Will it matter whom the Republican Party nominates? In a word, yes.
Who the nominee is will be very, very important, says Karlyn Bowman, an expert on polling at the American Enterprise Institute.
Democrats keep insisting that the presidential race will be a choice, not just a referendum on the incumbent. And the Republican nominee, no matter who it is, will not be without flaws. As Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley (D) put it at a Monitor-hosted breakfast Thursday, Obama is not running against the Almighty, hes running against the alternative.
Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, frames Obamas prospects this way: Hes eminently beatable, and Republicans smell this. But in electoral politics, its always compared to whom.
As of now, the GOP race seems to have boiled down to a choice between Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. That, of course, could change, especially if a major new prospect enters the race. But for the sake of argument, lets say either Governor Perry or Mr. Romney will get the nod.
Polls show that GOP voters believe Perry is electable, but polls of general election voters show Romney faring better than Perry against Obama. The Real Clear Politics average gives Obama a four-point lead over Perry but just a one-point lead over Romney.

When it cones to Social Security, now that Perry has taken his stand with calling it a Ponzi Scheme, he can’t back down now.
He’s got to present a coherent reform plan without scaring the Seniors.
If he does, he’ll be a winner, if not, this issue will be demagogued to death by the Dems and used as a weapon by Obama.
RE: neither Perry or Romney will get in office because of myself or any of my family.
Not even in the general elections, after the primaries are over and one of them becomes the candidate?
As of right now, Perry is the most conservative candidate than CAN beat Obama, is very different than McLame, and times are much different than 2008.
Perry is no conservative, but he likes playing one on TV.
He'll never ever get my vote..period. Illegal immigration has done more to destroy the USA than most of the corrupt and incompetent things pols have done. I'm not a Party loyalist who will drink poison for the sake of the Party.
Support of illegal immigration is what they call in the product evaluation process a fatal flaw. It means that the product is not selectable and usable regardless of its other capabilities, features, or costs. It is like selecting a combat infantryman's rifle that doesn't dependably fire. It is non-negotiable fact that excludes the product. It's the reason I once liked McCain and then said screw him. As a long term financial supporter of Numbers USA, Perry will never ever get my vote period. This is non negotiable. He can look like and pretend to act like Reagan whose amnesty plan still raises my blood pressure, but Perry won't get my vote. I believe his conservative act is just that, an act to compensate for his other beliefs.
Now what was the thread about?
One piece of news that may help you take some comfort.
In that recently released Bloomberg poll that showed all of America hating Republicans, I found this gem buried (paraphrasing because I don't have it in front of me):
Do you agree or disagree with Rick Perry's claim that Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme?
46% agree
50% disagree
If nearly as many people in that skewed poll agree with it before he has even really explained himself, then there is a very good chance it is not nearly the electoral poison it was once thought to be.
Perry is way better, by a lot, than Romney.
Yeah, but do either of them lose the election to Obama because of yourself or any of your family? Not something to be particularly proud of.
Well said. Then there is ricardo’s little, ahem, love of all/any things muslim/islam or c.a.i.r. related. It is a larger problem for him that is lurking and ready to get pushed out front very soon. It will finish this fraud. He is as every bit as terrible as paul and miit. God help us if ricardo is the next American President.
Call us and we’ll bail you out.
That says it all.
The last I checked, Numbers USA rates Bachmann B-, Cain C- and bought Romney's snake oil and regraded him as a C-.
If I'm picking from those three I'm picking Cain.
Palin, Perry and the rest they graded D and below.
I would vote for Daffy Duck before I'd let Obama have another term!
Of course there's your problem with the truth...someday you should try it.
But if that happens, Obamas Democratic base more worried about a Perry presidency than a Romney presidency would likely coalesce and rise up to defend him.
Uh, look, I still haven't made up my mind for the primary...but Hussein's base is crumbling big time. Oh, he'll have the BEDROCK: blacks, the media, academics, and Muslims.
Other than that, he is going to lose mainstream union voters, young people, whites, men, college educated, high school educated, and nearly every "purple" state in the Union.
He sucks, and America knows he sucks.
He got ZERO bump from his national speech, people are TIRED of his promises and lies and spending. Tired.
I've seen the depression in people I know who are in his cult...they're defensive and angry, but also very very quiet as the economy crashes and burns. They KNOW they've screwed up by supporting this moron, but they are too proud to say so. Will they get excited about this assclown at election time? Oh, some of them MIGHT. But most will just stay home.
FUMR!
Bobby.223 might say that Governor Perry is tolerant of Islam, when it comes to the rare non-violent group led by the Aga Khan. However, when he brings in CAIR, he proves that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
There’s no love lost either way.
It’s false like that photo-shopped pic that was going around, with the flag of Turkey super-imposed onto a pic of the Governor which first appeared on Salon.com and was obviously a fake. Part of the logo was even showing on his suit. It did not in any way resemble CAIR’s logo - it was the wrong color and the wrong graphic. But it was posted all over the ‘Net and even FR as proof of the governor’s appearing at a CAIR event.
It is hard for me to comprehend the level of propaganda and lies that so called “Freepers” perpetrate on this forum.
Used to be a place where truth was valued more than cheap shots.
