Rick Perry's HPV Stance Grounded in Case of Heather Burcham, Who Died of Cervical Cancer
ABC News ^ | September 15, 2011 | GINA SUNSERI

Posted on 09/15/2011 9:55:39 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Heather Burcham died in 2007 when she was 31. Cervical cancer killed her. She was misdiagnosed at age 26, and by the time she knew she had cancer, it was too late for effective treatment.

But she changed lives by living hers so passionately.

She was deeply religious, quick-witted, loving, with a quirky sense of humor; and she was determined to save other young women. Her passion for a cause made her a "Person of the Week" on ABC's "World News" program in 2007. Heather likely would have been shouting from the rooftops in frustration, listening to the current political debate about the HPV vaccine.

For her, the HPV vaccine was about saving lives, not politics, not campaign donations. She probably would have been heartbroken to hear Texas Gov. Rick Perry backtrack from his commitment to have girls vaccinated against cervical cancer.

Perry made her the poster child for his HPV executive decision, and spoke eloquently at her funeral. What a difference four years later as he debates the topic with other Republican candidates.

Her words to ABC News in 2007 still resonate, in light of the current debate in which this one face of the disease has been lost amid the political rhetoric.

"I don't want to have died in vain," she said. "I don't want my life to have no purpose whatsoever, and if I can help spread the word about cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine, then I haven't lived in vain."

They’re mad at Bachmann because she lied about there being “no choice”, and she lied about it causing mental retardation.

I didn't hear Bachmann's "retardation" statement in the post debate interview first hand, so I had to look it up :
"There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine ... She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result. There are very dangerous consequences."
Bachmann relayed a statement made to her post-debate and followed it up with a "very dangerous consequences" statement of her own. I have a hard time vilifying her for this. I think most rational folks would have an equally hard time, especially those aware of the negative side effects the HPV vaccine can and has exhibited.

-- So, I'm still not sure why you posted that lengthy cut/paste to me. --

Because I thought more information, on the thread, would be better. I used your remark because you assert that HPV causes cancer.

-- I can't help out someone who wants to stay ignorant. --

Well, of course not. Nobody can do that.

We all have our likes and dislikes.

Personally, I don’t like corruption, crony capitalism, pay-to-play, or anything else that puts the political class above We the People. We’ve got enough of that now and people trying to obfuscate this with fluffy bunnies and puppy dogs are being dishonest.

That said, I’ve never been called a curmudgeon before and I’m stoked...I must have hit a milestone! :D

Gardisil doesn’t have a black box warning because it wouldn’t be PC to add one.

You don't make any sense at all. This has to be an act.

Impossible, I’ve read here on FR that only sinners who deserve to die by stoning get HPV and cancer

Really? When you have to engage in this sort of hysteric character assignation and reckless demagoguery, you have all ready lost the debate.

Posting volume and hyperbolic rhetoric are not effective substitute for fact and reason.

You are making a total laughing stock of yourself with this sort of posting.

The Huckabee supporters were avid also. They didn’t really intend to help McCain get the nomination, but that was the result. The same thing is happening again. Bachman and Romney are acting as a tag team and Palin is facilitating it, probably for the same reason that Huckabee helped McCain, the VP nomination.

I have a hard time vilifying her for this.

I don't. It's inexcusable. She can recover her credibility if she apologizes and says she spoke out of error and/or emotion.

The rest of my response is in post #169.

That is no excuse. If a woman had told Bachmann that Gardisil caused her daughter to spontaneously explode, would you have excused her for repeating the claim? Repeating lies and misinformation does not absolve you of responsibility simply because you're repeating something you heard. I'll grant you that Bachmann may very well be just extremely ignorant, but that doesn't give you absolution to run around and repeat every asinine claim that you hear. Bachmann should be ashamed of herself.

Then you have NO excuse for writing a lying accusation as if you are judge, jury, and executioner... And the luddites worry about little church ladies poking holes in their 'fittest' will survive dogma, while ignoring all the mutations they claim demonstrates progression of life... See now none of the luddites will admit that there is NO 100% certainty that at any give time a mutation maybe, possibly, probably will take place and this 'save' the girls will have NO affect.

Remember that Palin has already made a public statement that she could support a Romney candidacy.

But, but, but that's just part of her double-secret plan to win the nomination!!

“I realize that, but HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer.”

BUT how do you contract HPV?

You are WAY out of line RR. Nobody is claiming Palin is pure as the driven snow however, it sounds pretty much like this is a lie written by sleazebag McGinnis.

-- Guess i missed 4000 girls dead from the vaccination --

I figure the vaccine is a net positive, but you are missing a few factors in your analysis. There is an unstated assumption (maybe true, I don;t know) that 100% of the cervical cancers are accompanied by HPV; and that the vaccination will prevent the cancer.

Some of those 4000 (is that per year?) are, unfortunately, going to happen even if/when HPV vaccination has been mandatory for all, for a generation or two.
