Almost all of them jumped alone, although eyewitnesses talked of a couple who held hands as they fell. One woman, in a final act of modesty, appeared to be holding down her skirt. Others tried to make parachutes out of curtains or tablecloths, only to have them wrenched from their grip by the force of their descent. The fall was said to take about ten seconds. It would vary according to the body position and how long it took to reach terminal velocity around 125mph in most cases, but if someone fell head down with their body straight, as

The Bible names one sin that is neither pardonable on earth or in Heaven. It is not suicide.
Indeed.
I knew exactly what you were expressing.
I’m sorry other FReepers took the opportunity to accuse
of something you didn’t do.
I don’t know, but I wonder, too, if some of those poor souls had that thought, and I know our loving God wouldn’t even consider counting it against them.
Bless you for sharing your heart. One thinks FR is a safe place to express such anguish. Don’t apologize to anyone else. It’s their problem, not yours.
Thank you. I have sent an email to the admin moderator to remove that post. Again, FReepers... I didn’t structure the sentence correctly. My point was that horrible thoughts and ideas must have been in their minds before they HAD to jump. I fully understand that they could either burn slowly and die or jump and die.
Wow. That’s a powerful image.
I actually ran across a British documentary, today, from 2006. It’s called “The Falling Man” done by Channel 4 in the UK. Very hard to watch......but it goes into this very discussion. IOW....I don’t think ANY of us would know what choices we’d make in those horrific circumstances. I’m sure many were in shock and felt helpless either way.
I have never even thought of these poor souls that jumped as suicide, and ignorantly I never thought that families would reject the idea that their loved one would do it because it brought shame. Is it odd to have never thought of this?
It is these “jumpers” and the passengers of Flight 93 that haunt me the most. Both had to make decisions that I am not sure I could handle.
I don’t think I can watch the memorials on TV on Sunday, I remember it like it was yesterday and the hurt for the families is overwhelming. God Bless them all.
I think you did just fine. No reason for some crank to jump on you.
I understood you perfectly fine.
Of course, I also “know” you and know you are not any kind of “jerk”.
I agree. I want to duck this whole anniversary. My husband & I, however, went to the budget movie tonight to see Monte Carlo instead of the wall to wall 9/11 coverage. It turned out to be the dumbest movie ever. We walked out and they gave us free passes to see a different movie in a couple of weeks.
As will I. I will spend my time watching my copy of Band of Brothers. Somehow that always helps.
sounds like a plan. “RETREAT, REGROUP, RETURN, REVENGE” from falling skies

****Did they worry that they wouldnt go to heaven since it was a suicide?****
I don’t think suicide thoughts had anything to do with it. History records early Christians throwing themselves in the river to drown rather than be killed by pagan Roman soldiers.
Can one consider the people who throw themselves from a sinking or burning ship only to drown as suicides? I don’t think so.
I'll never forget the vision of those poor souls falling. It made us here at home yell at the murderers who did this everytime someone fell.Heart wrenching to say the least.
We watched with tears of rage and despair and love for America when W said those who did this would be hunted down. You could have heard the "F****** A!!!" from our house for miles!
Religion of peace my ass!
Thank you. I wasn’t clear at all and I was just rambling on with what I think may have been some thoughts. I certainly don’t think a person would just calmly look at his or her odds and then joyously jump knowing that they would die. I was trying to express that the thoughts in their heads prior to jumping (whether it was a second or minutes) must have been absolutely horrifying and agonizing.
“Suicide (Latin suicidium, from sui caedere, “to kill oneself”) is the act of an organism intentionally causing its own death. “
These people did not intentionally cause their own deaths. They chose (in some cases) the lesser of two evils. They were in that “fight or flight” moment (absolutely no sick pun intended).
My religion says suicide is wrong. I think in these cases, God would not count them as suicides, but rather as very brave people..heroes. They were, as the article says, homicide victims.
While we haven't been able to rebuild after ten years and are dickering about whether to let a Mosque be built on the site to further humble America, those who celebrate the attack are planning more ...praying to their Allah for more blood to be shed and infidels to die.
I totally understand what you meant. I have wondered the same thing. I believe that many people didn’t jump voluntarily. Some could have been forced out by the smoke and fire. But whatever happened, it wasn’t suicide and I believe they are with God.
I agree completely with your take, but I am reminded of a Saint (Fox’s Book of Martyrs, read many years ago), strapped to a pole who held out his hand with which he had signed a false confession into the flames before they consumed his body, and made a remarkable last statement.
1 COR 10:13 “...but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
