The great thing about being a living legend is that you can pretty much speak your mind without major repercussions. I was reminded of that Thursday night when I found myself chatting with Ed Asner at a party celebrating the upcoming season at the Fitzgerald Theater. Asner's in town for his one-man performance as Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
By way of saying hello, I asked him what he thought of the announcement earlier in the day that Mary Tyler Moore would be getting a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild.
Asner, 81, hadn't heard the news and, based on his reaction, he didn't really seem to care.
"She's changed," said Asner, who was once president of SAG and received its lifetime achievement award in 2001. "She's a Republican." Asner was now in his "I hate spunk" mode. "Last time I saw her, she said Sarah Palin was a great lady."

True lib. He can know and be a friend to someone for decades. But offer ONE opinion to the contrary... instant enemy.
Shallow jerk.

Kudos to MTM. It takes guts in Hollywood to challenge conventional liberal “wisdom”. God bless her. It’s just like a Marxist to turn on a “friend” for a political disagreement.

Well, I guess Mary has the right to say and think what she wants without worrying about it either
The right to say and think what you want only belongs to the leftist/lock-step communists - anyone else trying that is a racist/SOB teabagger. Communists sicken me.

The biggest shock is that MTM is a republican. Asner says “she’s changed”, so I’m guessing Mary was a liberal at one time. With age usually comes wisdom. Doesn’t seem to apply to Asner, who gets stupider with age. Nothing like an OLD liberal. I figured out what liberalism really was when I was in my 20’s and look back in shame that I was once so foolish as to believe in it.

Ed Asner is an unapologetic commie. He should have been jailed for treason a long time ago. Remember, the aid and comfort provided to the communists in Nicaragua.
I always liked Mary Tyler Moore. She always seemed like a nice lady. Now, I know that she's smart too.

I never knew this. I remember Betty Ford made a guest cameo on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” back when she was 1st Lady. Lou Grant said he was hanging out with Fords in the same episode. Of course, the Fords were more of the establishment, liberal country club style Republicans but I figure he still would’ve been anathema to the likes of Asner for pardoning Nixon.

MTM is a Republican who likes Palin? Wow, I had no idea.

Glad Mary is changing. She was not always so...she was a Dem supporter and was even into PETA and such things.
I loved her shows. She was FUNNY! Those girls from Sex and the City should WISH they were like her.
To: kristinn
I always thought that Laura Petrie was MTM's best role.
Unfortunately Dick Van Dyke is an Obama-loving lib, though not as much of a whack job as Asner. I saw him much with that Doogie Howser actor in the uber-PC earth day special. He must love propaganda to participate in such a piece of manure.

Wow -- I just finished reading the comments at the site. Not familiar with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, at first I thought it must be a right-leaning news source.
Liberals and liberalism are a lot more reviled than the MSM and pop culture make it appear.

Actually, I think MTM qualifies MUCH more as a "living legend" than Asner, and I'd say that even if she was just as much a screaming lib as Asner.
