I have to admit I thought of posting the same thing. Coast to Coast (fun radio at night) is always talking about this. I have to turn the radio off when the guy comes on and talks about the terrorists setting off a nuclear device in the middle of the country, up in the sky, and the resulting disaster. The emp “could” fry every electronic device. No water, electricity, no cars, no computers....nada. This worries me so much I just turn the radio off when this expert is on. Scares me.

Where I am in Long Beach there is a big project underway to provide the cruise ships with electricity from the mainland so they will not need to use generators when in port. (Part of going green)
They have built huge transformers and are now digging down about eight feet for cables etc.

I live on a boat here on Shelter Island/Point Loma -— word is this will be out all night. 1200 gallons of diesel, 8 kw generator and a satellite TV means I’ll be in touch. San Diego Freepers keep safe!!

Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months
Friday, January 09, 2009
A new study from the National Academy of Sciences outlines grim possibilities on Earth for a worst-case scenario solar storm.
Damage to power grids and other communications systems could be catastrophic, the scientists conclude, with effects leading to a potential loss of governmental control of the situation.
The prediction is based in part on a major solar storm in 1859 that caused telegraph wires to short out in the United States and Europe, igniting widespread fires.
