Mexico City Violent crime has become a problem of national security in Mexico, where half of the territory is outside of state control and "we're in the hands of the narcos," an intelligence expert and author of a new book on Mexico's public safety woes, said.
Jorge Carrillo Olea, founder of Mexico's leading intelligence center, said the "state has lost territorial control, and therefore governability," over roughly 50 percent of the country.
The government has been incapable of fully enforcing the law and ensuring justice is upheld, said Carrillo, who spoke to Efe while in Mexico City to promote his new book, "Mexico en riesgo; una vision personal sobre un Estado a la defensive" (Mexico at Risk: A Personal Vision of a State on the Defensive), published this year by Grijalbo.
Carrillo, who in 1989 founded the Center for Research and National Security, or Cisen, a civil entity overseen by the interior ministry, said Mexico's crime and public safety problems will last for decades because the society has "reached a point of no return."

How many of you here watch that?
The perfect answer to this problem would be to institute a drug prohibition in our country to stifle the demand for street drugs.
Wait.... We’re already doing that, and flushing tens of billions doing so......
***The government has been incapable of fully enforcing the law and ensuring justice is upheld,...***
MMmmmm - that sounds disturbingly familiar...
Come on man, drugs don’t hurt anybody
</sarcasm>
Half? I would have guessed more like 100 percent.
Where’s the Mexican Army? Or are they part of the problem? Sounds to me like we will have a border war with Mexico. Not a peep from the President or Congress.....or anyone else in our government. Interesting. Can we wait until 2012?
Actually, I would guess, that if all drugs were made legal, there would still be a narco state in Mexico. The feds would have such high taxes on the legal stuff, it still would be worth smuggling across the border.
Why is there a “Latino” section on Fox?
I agree completely. Tobacco is completely legal, but efforts on Indian reservations to undercut the effects of exorbitant tobacco tax abound.
There would be an explosion of “drug shops”, then stiffer and stiffer greedy regulation, and then an explosion of “pirate dealers” back on street corners.
There would be drugs absolutely everywhere.
If they control 1/2 they control it all. The war in Mexico way overshadows in numbers killed and the violence than anything in the middle east. It is not being covered except by one little station who’s owners life is consistently threatened:
http://www.blogdelnarco.com/ this website will open your eyes quickly. 30,000 people killed last year alone. Most in a very brutal fashion. We can send soldiers etc to Libya and elsewhere to further the caliphate, but lets not talk Mexico.
We are seeing that here in Colorado. Reefer madness took hold when medical marijuana was legalised. I would guess that 75% of medical cards are phony and shops abounded. $85 with medical history for a card and $125 for a card w/” doctor consultation” (I have a hard time believing brands like “Train Wreck” are really medicinal!haha) Prices are pretty high. The state has started cracking down and who knows where pricing will end up.
........and apparently a little more than half of the American government since nobody seems to want to do anthing about it!!
(((ping)))
Wrong.. gangs have always controlled Mexico..
for Mexico is a democracy which is Mob Rule by mobsters..
or a dictatorship which is also Mob Rule by mobsters..
Most of this planet is controlled by Mob Rule by mobsters..
China, India, England.. Germany, France, Saudi Arabia..
even Canada and Australia..
“Tribes with guns”
How much of the US do they control?
But, but they’re just here to make a living for their poor children! They’ve been here for years and all their relatives are here so we must give them amnesty. And more government freebies. And the right to vote. And drive drunk without licenses and insurance.
“Tobacco is completely legal, but efforts on Indian reservations to undercut the effects of exorbitant tobacco tax abound.”
It goes on with alcohol too, but as far as I know the problem isn’t as pronounced. Any idea why? Proportionally less tax than on tobacco and therefore less incentive? Harder to transport?
Only half? ;)
The best war on drugs: Legalize them through prescriptions.
Violent crime has become a problem of national security in Mexico, where half of the territory is outside of state control and "we're in the hands of the narcos,"Wow, when did *this* happen?!? /s
