This map seems to be making the rounds.

While it is impossible for anyone to say with certainty that the red area is "controlled by Al-Qaeda", the red area contains a population of probably less than 100,000 people and the orange area less than 500,000.

This is one of the least populated areas in the world, with the fewest resources. The red area contains no settlements larger than 12,000 people and the largest town within 200 miles of the red area is Timbuktu, with 50,000 people.

There are understood to be fewer than 500 armed Al Qaeda operatives in the orange area (perhaps no more than 250), which is larger than Texas.

For comparison, the tribal area of Pakistan which most observers agree is really controlled by the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, has a population of 4 million.
