Jim DeMint open to endorsing Romney?
PoliticObama ^ | August 31st | Alexander Burns

In Jonathan's story this morning — about the Romney team's plan to dial up their intensity a bit against Rick Perry without going into full-on panic mode — there's this intriguing nugget about the South Carolina senator:

“He’s a good friend and we wanted to do what we could to make it work,” said senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom of their change of heart. DeMint was a key Romney backer in 2008, but is holding out this election cycle. Romney’s reconsideration suggests that the South Carolinian hasn’t ruled out endorsing the former governor again.

We need to call Demint's office and we need to do it soon.

This is an outrage, if true.

(Though, my gut feeling is that politicObama is trying to help out Romney, still. We need to get this clarified. We need a statement from demint's office which rebukes this.)

I get that feeling.

The elites are a bit skittish and jumpy right now and are wanting one of THE most conservative Senators to support their elitist RINO.

Why do these elected officials say one thing and do the opposite?

It’s way too early in the primary process for endorsements and Senator DeMint is no fool.

He’s our premiere conservative US Senator.

Alot of good it did for Romney in 2008. What did he finish, 4th in South Carolina?

I don`t have the overpowering hatred for Romney some do, I just don`t want him as the nominee, and I am pretty confident he won`t be. There`s just no reason for him to become president. He`s hobbled by so many issues, and he doesn`t seem capable of getting anyone but the country clubbers worked up. And this time I just don`t think that`s enough for the establishment to get him over the finish line. I don`t see what coming out for him will do for DeMint or anyone else.

DeMint will be toast if he goes with Milt.

TOAST. That said, this is probably Politico/Martin BS.

If he were to endorse Romney, it would make me more comfortable with Mitt. I just don’t see DeMint being a sellout during this primary process. If he likes Mitt, he must have good reasons.

Having said that, I don’t see it happening.

It’s the same dangerous game DeMint played in ‘08. He expected it would get him the VP slot. To do so now is utterly inexcusable (frankly, it was in ‘08, too).

He did it in ‘08.

I'll give him a Mulligan on that one. He knew enough not to back McCain; he probably believed that out of the field of Huck, McCain, Romney and Giuliani that Romney was the best bet. He probably also thought that Hunter, Tancredo and Thompson were not viable.

Not too many of us liked who we were given to vote for in '08.

If he pulls that again when the nomibnation is in play, that's a different story.

I sure hope not. Romney is the only one I wouldn’t vote for. He is a major statist; as a Mormon, he’s as close as you can get to being a Muslim (a member of a flaky theocracy with a weirdo prophet); and everything he did in Massachussetts was something that could just as easily have been done by a Dem.

He won’t win, and I refuse to affirm another loser GOP RINO candidate once again. I voted for McCain, knowing he was going to lose but wanting to vote against Bozo, and it’s something I won’t do again.

Really? What a stupid/ignorant thing to decide who you would support based on what someone else would do. If DeMint endorses Romney he by that very endorsement isn’t any different than any other establishment Republican.

DeMint like other conservatives supported Romney to beat McCain. I’m not sure how enthusiastic he was about it but I know others conservatives that did so halfheartedly. The only decent candidates that year wer in single digits or Fred Thompson...who flamed out quickly unfortunately.

If he endorsed Romney this year I’d have a real problem with it. Actually I’m not expecting DeMint to endorse anyone until the primaries are over or at very least it’s a foregone conclusion who will win.

He probably thinks this will end up Perry vs Romney and both suck so he is going with the least evil.
