John Fund: Why Sarah Palin Is Not Running
Newsmax ^ | 09-02-11 | John Fund

Sarah Palin will swoop into Iowa and New Hampshire to speak at tea party rallies this Labor Day weekend, whipping up talk she will announce her candidacy for president. After all, this coming Saturday will mark the third anniversary of her acceptance speech for vice president at the Republican National Convention – a speech which established her as both a conservative icon and a magnet for criticism.

Her supporters are certainly encouraging talk she will be a 2012 candidate. Peter Singleton, her Iowa political organizer, told National Review’s Robert Costa last month: “I believe she will run. Labor Day will kick off the Republican campaign for the nomination. She is going to make a major, major speech.”

But Team Palin is extremely sensitive about anyone else who speculates about what she’s up to. Karl Rove, President Bush’s political strategist, told Fox News last month he thought Palin’s schedule in Iowa meant she would announce her candidacy this coming weekend. That prompted this riposte from Team Palin on the website of her PAC:

“Any professional pundit claiming to have ‘inside information’ regarding Governor Palin’s personal decision is not only wrong but their comments are specifically intended to mislead the American public.”

At the risk of being accused of misleading people, let me state that Sarah Palin isn’t running for president.

Wow. You left out part of what Palin said (at least you put it in "..." to show you took it out.

Unfortunately, the part you took out shows that she was in the middle of a statement when Kelly interrupted, and her "no" that you chose to highlight was just the shortest answer she could give, and was not part of her thought process.

Here is the more full text:

Palin: Still listening to the debate and the discourse and the GOP lineup right now, and still looking for that candidate whom I can put my heart and soul behind to support, if I don’t see that person here in short order I would be willing to put my name forward in the name of service, I’m impressed with the lineup

Meghan (interrupting): Have you not found him or her yet?

Palin: no, I’m impressed with the lineup, but there’s still is quite a long process, there will be a lot of comings and goings with this lineup...

It is clear that she was NOT saying she couldn't support any of the candidates, she was saying she was still LOOKING at the candidates to see if she COULD support them.

I just say this because if Palin ends up not running, and instead endorses one of the existing candidates, I don't want people coming back and saying she lied in this interview, based on an inaccurate interpretation of what she said. For all I know, she'll run, or she'll back someone who isn't yet in the race. But her words clearly don't rule out her supporting an existing candidate.

One, I did not twist her words or misrepresent them. She clearly states she hasn't found that person. Whether or not she changes her mind is her prerogative. What is clear is that when the interview occurred, there wasn't anyone she could put her heart and soul behind as a candidate. Two, even you're guessing what she 'would' have said based on where Kelly asked the question. People can go view the interview for themselves on PalinTV or foxnews.com.

The fact remains, Palin- in her OWN words on more than one occasion- has said she hasn't found someone to support. Whether that changes remains to be seen.

Interesting theory.

Yesterday I posted an article about Perry's people being behind the COD invite/not invite on Sarah's FB page. Ten minutes later, the post was deleted. I thought it was very strange unless Sarah is thinking about teaming up with Perry. The more I read about Perry the less I like him. I am a Palin fan and I do hope she runs for President. Interesting times, that's for sure.

Since you seem to know about them, what is the plan for converting the “Organizing for Palin” groups, which are not under FEC rules, into Palin for President organizations, which would be under the federal election rules? Have those groups already been tracking all the money as if it is hard money? Or did they have to?

I’ve always thought that one of the big problems of mounting a presidential bid is that you have to be meticulous about the money, which is why candidates set up “exploratory” committees — not because they need to “explore”, but because that is the only way they can ensure that their organizations meet the FEC rules when they actually announce.

It’s not a guess. That’s why ALL the words were important. She had already started the next sentence (about the field being “impressive”, and she repeated that start of the sentence after Kelly’s interruption, which shows she was still finishing her previous thoughts, not changing the answer based on Kelly’s question.

I agree with what you say in this comment: “She wasn’t anyone she could put her heart and soul behind as a candidate”. But that’s different than saying she couldn’t support any of the candidates.

If someone asked me, I would answer the question the same way. I haven’t yet decided I can support any of the candidates with my whole heart and soul. But it would be foolish to interpret that as saying I COULDN’T support any of the candidates fully. Just that I haven’t decided yet if I can. I’m still evaluating, just as Sarah Palin said she was still watching and deciding.

Mind your own business, thanks.

What does that mean? I'm not asking you for your measurements. You said they were putting an organization together, and so I asked you about the details. If you weren't supposed to divulge the existance of the organization, you should have thought of that before you posted. But why would you be upset that I asked you about what you posted. This is a public board, and I wanted to know your thoughts on what you posted.

I don’t have time for this. The information and several threads have been previously posted here. Check C4P for all the details. What the heck would I know about the FEC?

This was the post I made:

http://spectator.org/blog/2011/09/01/palin-perry-and-paranoia

The comment I made with the post said something about it seeming like dirty politics because Perry and company are repoted to be involved in the Iowa speech/no speech controversy. I don't know why my post was deleted.

Sorry. You have time to post; all you had to say was “I don’t know”. It had nothing to do with me minding my own business.

No, I don’t have time to find those threads and you’re the one who wants detailed information as though her organizations are out of line. Check out C4P. All grassroots and we’ve been in action for over a year and in every state.

Hello -

I thought my “wipe them out” comment with a picture of “The Emperor” was sufficiently over the top to be clearly seen as humor, but, given the current political climate on FR, in everyone jockeying to present “their candidate” I should have finished by saying “sarc”.

I apologize.

Why is everybody so touchy lately?

Relax, have a drink, sit back and enjoy the show (the GOP debate).

Surely a frontrunner will emerge soon.

Sarah Palin is working magic over the media, staying visible to draw fire from the entire competing field of candidates, and her absence from the actual campaign trail both frees her from a grueling schedule, and builds enthusiasm.

However, there are those who don’t like her in the first place, who nevertheless claim to be her biggest fan, but not if she doesn’t announce soon.

They’re called trolls.

Thanks Lazlo in PA.

John Fund's column is excellent and well-reasoned, in my opinion. And it confirms what I have observed since I heard Erick Erickson (RedState.com editor) said on WSB750 a couple of months ago. Erickson said at the time that Sarah Palin was quietly but strongly urging Rick Perry to enter the GOP race.

As background, Erickson said that Palin and Perry had become good friends and political allies while governors of major energy-producing states. Erickson said that Palin is a very smart person who believes that at this time, Rick Perry is the strongest GOP alternative to Mitt Romney and the strongest candidate overall to defeat Barack Obama.

Fund and Erickson might be wrong, but I think they are right. Time will tell. I am one of those Sarah Palin fans who believes she is best suited as a king-maker for 2012, and that she has a bright future in the next GOP Administration and perhaps beyond. Many people have very big roles to play...
