Perry in position to lead on immigration policy
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 31, 2011 | Geoffrey A. Hoffman

Imagination is the key tool missing in the political arena.

Immigration policy, especially, suffers from a lack of creative solutions and imagined possibilities for a better future, not just for immigrants but for all of us. The undocumented population recently was estimated at approximately 12 million. However, no one knows for sure how many there are in the United States. By definition, the undocumented are unrepresented in our political process, but also in our census. There is no way to accurately count them. There is no way for them to forcefully represent themselves, their interests or to communicate their political will unless citizens and advocates do it for them.

This lack of imagination is starkly illustrated by recent proposed legislation - for example, the so-called HALT Act, aimed at stripping immigrants of some forms of discretionary relief, as well as overreaching state legislation, which aims to tighten restrictions on noncitizens and their families by making it easier to question, detain and deport them. The alternative (not yet imagined in the minds of legislators or the public) is to address the salient question: How do we utilize the talents of the millions who have been relegated to the shadows? Imagine tapping into the creative energies and ideas of these people, bringing them from the shadows to the forefront of our economy and society, educating and empowering them so they can serve as future leaders and engines of empowerment to others and engines for our teetering economy.

Hoffman is director of the University of Houston Immigration Clinic.

Well, if the director of U of H's legal department dedicated to seeking asylum for illegal aliens endorses Perry, who am I to disagree?

Sigh. I expect amnesty will come up again. Reagan. Bush. McCain, etc. The GOP in leadership does have a history of pushing for it.

Don't worry, its going to stop coming up soon because its going to be too late. Next will be a decade of marxists calling themselves democrats in control and finally they'll drop the facade and we'll be marxists and we'll "elect" some clown for life who prefers to be called "General.

No kidding. It's been an explosion. I don't care how far you go out to the boonies anymore, you'll still see 5 foot nothing Montezuma look-alikes, straight off the Oaxaca express pushing a lawn mower or hauling a bundle of shingles.

Just 12 million wouldn't make it like that.

Try a Florida maternity ward. Pop walking down the hall with a half dozen kids in tow, off to see the new Democrat.

Why is this issue so difficult to understand?

The answer is to build a fence and patrol with our military to keep out illegals, and deport all the illegals that are here today.

A MUCH cheaper and easier way to round up and deport all the 30 million illegals here now, is to offer US Citizens a $10,000.00 tax-free reward for each and every illegal caught and deported.

No amnesty. No exceptions to being deported.

Illegal immigration is THE KEY to the perpetuation of the status quo in DC......

You CANNOT..in 2012...run ANY political campaign that is ambiguous about your immigration “position” in the current job market.

Unemployed Americans are looking for assurances of their governments’ concern about THEIR plight...not that of businesses forced into looking for disposable labor because of onerous tax and regulatory policy.

Illegal Labor is the Feds out for preserving the status quo regarding Taxes and Regulation...and is the ultimate litmus test as to the candidates in question commitment to meaningful regulatory and tax reform. If they are wishy-washy on the subject...they have no real intent to disturb the DC status quo...no matter how big their cowboy hat and six-gun.

The estimate of 12 million is a joke. I use 30 million because its probably more accurate.

If there are 30 million illegals in America, we’re almost out of time. 30 million illegals is enough to populate more than 50 congressional districts. That’s 50 congressional districts that don’t need to exist and I guarantee they’re 90% or more are democrat. They don’t even need to vote to create those new districts, they only need to be counted.

My suggestion for republicans who desire a pro amnesty candidate. Just go ahead and vote democrat, because you’re doing the exact same damage anyway. The least you could do is be honest about it.

I don’t know Rick Perry’s past stands on immigration, but if he is going to win the GOP primaries and the fall 2012 presidential election, he has to be firm against amnesty, for border enforcement and for deporting illegals found here. Once president, he better hold to these promises as going soft on illegals just to let some employers exploit cheap labor is a bad move. Legal Americans need jobs and will do a job if not pushed out by an illegal.

Hey, I'll give them the fact that that is way better than a South Side of Chicago maternity ward, where Pop is either unknown, skipped out, or is getting temporary housing at the corner of 26th and California.

Just a few decades ago, old and young black men performed those jobs. It was entry level cheap labor - but it provided food, clothing and shelter to people who were eager for work and wages and the sense of self-worth that comes with effort.

The illegal immigrants are tomorrow’s freed slaves.

Here’s what you need to do to lead on immigration:
1) secure our borders
2) PUNISH businesses that employ illegal workers, unions that refuse to report them on jobsites or within their membership and state and local gov’ts that flout federal law by establishing sanctuary cities.
3) NO AMNESTY
4) NO Tax payer money to illegal immigrants.

This is Cong. THAD MCCOTTER’S plan as detailed on McCotter2012.com. Please visit if you’d like to see more detailed white papers on the issues that this Nation faces.
