When Rick Perry signed the Susan B. Anthony Lists pro-life pledge last week, it raised a few eyebrows among those who recall his endorsement of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2008, a noted pro-choice Republican. Perry insisted that a President Giuliani would appoint conservative jurists to the bench and that his personal views would not be relevant. Four years later, Perry now says that, if nominated, he will make sure his running mate is not just pro-life, but an advocate for the cause:
Surging Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, the Texas governor, has pledged to influential Christian leaders that he will push pro-life policies, oppose gay marriage, and pick cabinet officials and a vice president who share his values, a promise that would rule out a Perry-Rudy Giuliani ticket.
"At a weekend Texas gathering of about 200 conservative leaders, some from Washington, Perry and his wife Anita portrayed themselves as authentic and life-long conservatives who could bring the most pro-life administration ever to Washington."

Oh and BTW Perry/Texas executes illegal alien rapists and murderers too. Does that make him any less pro-life?
I’m talking about innocent life...not convicted murderers.
Why should the innocent baby pay with his or her life?
“He supports abortion in cases of rape and incest.”
And probably if the Life of the mother is in jeopardy. But then so do the vast majority of pro-life Americans.
Rudy is deeply disappointed.
Some people claim Perry’s endorsement of Rudy in ‘08 called into doubt his pro-life reputation.
You know, we’ve seen that bandied about here, along with other unwarranted assumptions that Perry must’ve agreed with Rudy on everything where they actually differ.
Otherwise, I can’t see where it would’ve ever been in doubt.
Perry explained that Rudy would’ve appointed conservative judges but otherwise not involved himself in the issue.
Now, Perry is affirming that his VP choice would be unequivocally pro-life.
What’s your definition of pro-life?
Great!
You might ask the Texas pro-life groups, since they all give him very high marks, saying "Governor Perry has a wonderful pro-life record".
If you feel that way, you would be on the extreme end of the issue.
Can’t help ya.
They shouldn't, and in a perfect world, they wouldn't. However, if I had the opportunity to vote for a law that would outlaw abortion except in the cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother, I would not only vote for it, I would campaign for it as hard as I possibly could. Those exceptions constitute less than 1% of all of the abortions performed, and while those deaths would still be tragic, millions of lives would be saved.
Of course, once the law was passed, I would immediately begin working to educate more people why the rape and incest exceptions are also immoral and trying to get those outlawed as well.
I believe that I am pro life. I also believe that anything that outlaws abortion will and should have three exeptions.
Rape - I awill not be party to anything that forces a woman to carry her attackers child. If she chooses to, great I support that. But I would never agree to force it.
Incest - I am iffy on this one as it’s not even something that you hear about happening much anymore. Plus it seems this could be a huge loophole in the law, “My daddy is my baby daddy” without any proof of such.
Life (not health) of the Mother - As in, the woman WILL DIE if she attempts to carry the child to term. Similar to the rape exception, this should be an option, but the mother in no way should be forced to make either choice, whichever she chooses I would support.
I understand that you do not consider me or anyone else that holds these views to be pro-life, and I respect your opinion, but that is all that it is, your opinion. You shouldn’t judge others (Perry included) to not be Pro-life simply because you have stricter views on the subject than we do.
A vice president’s position on this doesn’t really matter unless the president dies or if there is a tie-breaking vote in the Senate. However, Perry is showing that he knows the sort of promises he needs to make to get elected.
Other than dropping Giuliani from the Veep possibilities, I don’t know what this will change.
Abortion kills 1 million American citizens a year. Getting rid of that will surely help American businesses.
Well here’s an analogy.
Say I’m driving my beautiful restored caddy to the store. Picking up some milk and bread.
I come back from the store and find that some garbage truck backed into it, squashed it and drove away.
What do I do now? Is it right for me to force open the trunk, grab my golf clubs and smash the car parked in front of me? No.
This is what abortion in the case of incest or rape does, it kills a child for something that someone else has done. It doesn’t do anything about the rapist, and in many cases, hides the evidence of the rapist.
If the unborn are truly persons than the circumstances surrounding their conception are irrelevant. Those conceived in rape or incest have the same rights as anyone else.
I used to think that way. But now I feel it would be hypocritical and intellectually dishonest to declare life at conception, support life, and then make allowances to destroy life. I feel terribly bad for those traumatised by rape and incest. God’s grace would help those through those trying times. It makes no sense to add sin to sin and then everyting is ok. By the way statistics show rape and incest is infinitesimal as a percentage of actual abortions. It is just a way to accuse Christians of being heartless. The truth is just the contrary.
That’s good to read. I was wearing my “Limbaugh/Coulter ‘08” t-shirt the morning that McCain named Sarah Palin as VP choice. I was so afraid he’d nominate Kay Bailey or another non-prolifer. This would have been a real problem, since my husband’s the County chair and I have to behave at least a little.
As soon as I heard the news, I went home to change into my McCain shirt that I’d never before worn.
Texas, which crafts a budget every two years, was facing a $6.6 billion shortfall for its 2010-2011 fiscal years. It plugged nearly all of that deficit with $6.4 billion in Recovery Act money, allowing it to leave its $9.1 billion rainy day fund untouched.
Even as Perry requested the Recovery Act money, he railed against it. On the very same day he asked for the funds, he set up a petition titled No Government Bailouts.
As a Tenth-Amendment President, shouldn’t Perry’s position be “leave it up to the states?” Abortion, pro-or-con, simply isn’t in the federal orbit.
I guess I would have to be forced into a situation where my own daughter was impregnated as a result of rape to make the final judgement but, at this point, I wouldn’t force her to carry that child. it would be the same as being raped again and again, psychologically.
I did notice that none of you mentioned *in cases of medical emergency to the mother). Where do thy stand?
