Herman Cain and Rick Perry generate the strongest favorable images among Republicans familiar with them, and have separated themselves from the remainder of announced GOP candidates.

Do not fall for this phony!
Three reasons I can think of:
1. His opponents were worse.
2. If you are eying a future in national politics favors given now pay big later.
3. She didn't always make good endorsements.
I think we'd all pretty much agree on the first one. The second one is trying to read someones intent, and even though several FReepers believe themselves fully capable of that I won't try it. The third contradicts the first, so it's just thrown in as a fact, not necessarily germane to this situation.
If the winning Republican picks Herman Cain to be the Vice-Presidential Candidate, Obama and his racist minions are SCREWED....
I never read whether Perry worked for the Dukakis-Bentsen ticket in 1988 or not. If he did, that probably explains why GHWB endorsed KBH for governor in 2010.
Did he really say that today? Do you have a link?
If he did, that's just an out and out lie (okay, misrepresentation of the truth). You don't become Al Gore's main guy in Texas in 1988 if that's true. Something isn't right here.
Handel over Johnson in GA support #3.
I heard the same thing from a friend on Facebook too. He was really shocked Perry said that.
Amen. Frankly, I think the Bushes have more integrity than Perry. None of the Bushes ever supported a sociopathic hack Leftist like Al Gore.
Reagan couldn’t have influenced him in ways that motivated his decision later on down the road?
Thanks for your post. Sounds reasonable. But many article researches show Palin saying how conservative Perry is; as well as Palin could have endorsed Hutchinson a woman but she knew Perry may run and not Hutchinson so I conclude a guess like you that it is politics and sucking up for a VP slot and Perry is not a RINO no more than Reagan who is a former democrat and was for amnesty. So if Perry is all of a sudden not conservative enough for Palin it looks strange. She didn’t have to endorse anyone. She pin pointed Perry for good reasoning. She is a player politician just like the rest of them.Being that she said ‘you betcha’ to being Romney’s running mate in 2012 VP in 2012.It is poltics and she is a politician.

Sarah Palin, the Republican governor of the nation’s first-largest state and the party’s VP nominee last fall, has weighed in to support her gubernatorial colleague, Perry.
In a letter distributed this week to nearly 11,000 members of the Texas Federation of Republican Women, longtime supporters of Hutchison, Palin follows the Reagan Rule and does not attack Hutchison by name. But she strongly touts the “true conservative” credentials of Perry, who befriended the Alaskan chief executive in the Republican Governors Assn. when he was chairman last year.
“He walks the walk of a true conservative,” Palin writes. “And he sticks by his guns — and you know how I feel about guns.”
As is the case for most party primaries, Texas’ will be a struggle for the far reaches of the faithful, who have historically been much more likely to turn out in a spring election. Palin praises Perry’s stand against federal bailouts and his opposition to abortion.
“Not every child is born into ideal circumstances,” Palin adds, “but every life is sacred. Rick Perry knows this — it is at the core of his being.”

Ever hear of Reagan Democrats?
Al Gore in 1988 was positioned as a conservative democrat, and he had to be since he was from Tennessee. He and his wife Tipper were famous for their campaign to rate music, cds, movies, etc. They were favorably spoken of by Eagle Forum and Focus on Family.
They were southern conservative democrats.
Wrong! So wrong! Perry was on record back in 2010 as clearly stating that the last time he voted for a Democrat for president in the general election was in 1976 when he voted for Carter. He admits he was fooled by Carter - Southern Democrat, farmer, Christian - he though Carter was a conservative Dem.
Concerning working for Al Gore in 1988:
[John] Sharp countered by noting that in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, Mr. Perry was co-chairman of Mr. Gores Texas campaign. Mr. Perry acknowledged that but said there was a push to get a conservative Southerner elected president. (Sam Attlesey, Link to Bush separates Perry, Sharp, The Dallas Morning News, 9/15/98)
Sorry, the facts do not bear out your contention. Perry voted for Reagan twice and for Bush41 over Dukakis, all before becoming a Republican. He was a "Reagan Democrat", like so many other Southern Democrats.
Now that you know the facts, I assume you will cease making this scurrilous charge and apologize.

Not only that, but almost 20 years later, Slick Rick continued to endorse liberals, backing Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination.
I know that Al Gore ran as a conservative democrat senator (a conservative dem is a moderate everywhere else) I was alive then. I was in Tennessee then.
I don’t need someone to tell me what I know.
He opposed abortion, violent/sexual hollywood entertainment, supported prayer or a moment of silence in school, and gun ownership.
This was the ONLY way to win in BIBLE BELT Tennessee.
You are so wrapped up in your dislike for Perry that you are ascribing things to him that aren’t true.
Go ahead and be against him. I don’t care. At least fix this one, though, because you’re off base in what you’re saying.
Between you and me I liked Rudy better then McCain, Mitt, or Huckabee.
I backed Fred but no one seemed to want to climb onboard that train after a few weeks. Hey, some of you are upset your favorite isn’t leading polls. well so was I..in 2008 when they ran after Mitt, mcCain and Huckabee.
Romney was a liberal and Huckabee aside from religion was a liberal. It was just a pretty lousy field for a conservative. I didn’t come onboard the final ticket until Palin and then McCain went and blew the traction he got from that pick.
Oh, and no Gore wasn’t a conservative Democrat but he wasn’t the fire breathing crazed nut he is now either. I swear the 2000 election caused that guy to snap deep inside. Before that he was pretty...dull.
Go, Herman!!!
Yep. I remember that. The Hollywood crowd didn’t like him or Leiberman once upon a time. They still don’t like Lieberman.
I don’t know why it’s so hard to admit before Florida 2000 Gore wasn’t seen by people as a raging liberal. I wouldn’t call him a conservative ever but he was viewed with suspicion by liberals and seen as a “moderate”. Then the guy went crazy, grew a beard and became a born again moveon spokesman.
That would be an ultimate pubbie ticket.
